Patriots OC Josh McDaniels Says He 'Definitely' Wants to Be a Head Coach Again

Mike ChiariMay 11, 2018

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Friday he wants to be a head coach again one day but is happy to still be part of the Pats organization.

Speaking to reporters (h/t NFL.com's Kevin Patra), McDaniels discussed his plans moving forward:

"There's a lot that goes into those things. It can be very complicated. I'll say this, I've stated again and again that I definitely want to be a head coach again. At the same time, I love being here. This is where my kids were born and raised. And we've made a pretty special life here and that's not an easy thing to leave. So, there's a lot to consider.

"Certainly, leaving here, I don't take lightly, ever. I would never take that lightly. It was a difficult process and I'm very happy with the decision that we made and grateful to be here and continue working toward the 2018 season."

McDaniels agreed to become the Indianapolis Colts' head coach earlier this offseason before reversing course and returning to the Pats.

He previously served as the Denver Broncos' head coach in 2009 and 2010.

McDaniels went 8-8 with the Broncos in 2009, but he was fired during the next season with Denver's record at 3-9.

He was a longtime Patriots assistant before his stint with the Broncos. After serving as the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator in 2011, he returned to the Pats in 2012.

McDaniels has been New England's offensive coordinator ever since and continues to build his stock as a head coaching candidate.

In his career as an assistant, McDaniels is a five-time Super Bowl champion.

Although his resume is difficult to argue against, McDaniels' handling of the Colts situation could give teams pause in the future.

In the present, however, McDaniels will continue to guide one of the NFL's best offenses led by reigning MVP Tom Brady. That makes the Pats one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the NFL once again.
