Undrafted Free Agents 2018: Predictions for J.T. Barrett and Top Signed Players
Every year at the NFL draft there are over 200 players drafted, but there are always a handful of guys who don't hear their name called that may have expected to.
While we may be scratching our heads as to why they weren't drafted, they've now become undrafted free agents.
Being an undrafted free agent isn't the end of the world.
Guys like Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, Antonio Gates, Priest Holmes, Chris Harris and Wes Welker are among many players to not hear their names called but still got a phone call afterward.
Below, we'll look at three guys in the same boat, just for this year's class. Can they be the next best thing?
J.T. Barrett, QB, Indianapolis Colts
The longtime Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback may not have heard his name called on draft day, but he got scooped up almost immediately after by the Indianapolis Colts.
While Barrett may possess all the intangibles you'd want out of a quarterback, I'm not sure he has the ability to be a consistent quarterback in the NFL.
Barrett can make plays happen with zone read and running the ball, but his passing accuracy isn't there for the NFL.
Right now, the Colts quarterback depth chart consists of Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett and Brady Kaaya.
Perhaps Barrett can beat out Kaaya for the third spot, and the Colts could use him in some different packages, but that is a long shot, too.
What it might come down to for Barrett is similar to that of another former Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller—a position change.
Quinton Flowers, QB, Cincinnati Bengals
One of the more hyped late-round quarterback prospects coming into the draft was Quinton Flowers out of UCF.
Flowers, like Barrett, is a good scrambler, but the consistency in passing the ball isn't there with Flowers to make teams invest heavily in him as a quarterback.
However, Flowers joins a roster in the Bengals that have guys like Matt Barkley and Jeff Driskel at quarterback.
Depending on how the Bengals view Flowers, perhaps he could be an option for a third quarterback spot.
However, Flowers is better built to be a running back in the NFL.
At 5'10" and just under 215 pounds, Flowers may not have blazing running back speed (4.63 40-yard dash), but scrambling as a quarterback, you can see he runs with a ferociousness that could lead to a potential role as a running back somewhere.
Hercules Mata'afa, DL, Minnesota Vikings
While Hercules Mata'afa played on the interior defensive line, he doesn't belong there.
Playing at Washington State, Mata'afa was able to out-technique and maneuver his opposing offensive linemen, but he might struggle with that in the NFL.
However, the Vikings could make Mata'afa into an edge-rusher.
While he may be explosive at the tackle position, it will be intriguing to see if that translates to being an edge-rusher.
Mata'afa will get all the tutelage he needs from Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen. Mata'afa will be a fun project.
He has a lot of things you can't teach like a never-ending motor, so that will be much needed for his switch from defensive tackle to edge-rusher.
