Injured Shohei Ohtani Not Scheduled to Pitch for Angels Until Mariners Series

Adam WellsApr 30, 2018

Shohei Ohtani is not scheduled to pitch again until this weekend's series against the Seattle Mariners, according to Los Angeles Angels beat writer Jeff Fletcher, who heard from manager Mike Scioscia.

"We're targeting Shohei to pitching somewhere on the weekend in Seattle, just to make sure this is behind him and he gets the proper workout to test it more, instead of rushing him and trying to see where he is on Wednesday," Scioscia said, per the Associated Press, via ESPN.com. "It's the best course of action for Shohei and for us."

There have been two previous injury scares for Ohtani this season. The Japanese star was removed from an April 17 start against the Boston Red Sox after two innings with a blister on his middle finger.

The second issue came April 27, when Luis Valbuena replaced Ohtani in the seventh inning against the New York Yankees after Ohtani suffered a mild ankle sprain.

After arriving in Los Angeles amid a mountain of hype, Ohtani has mostly thrived. The 23-year-old is hitting .341/.383/.682 with four home runs and 12 RBI and has a 4.43 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 20.1 innings as a pitcher.

The good news is Mike Trout is healthy and playing at an MVP level, and the rest of the roster is better equipped to hang with the Houston Astros (19-10, 2.5 games up) in the American League West until Ohtani returns to the mound.

Per Fletcher, Ohtani is expected to DH on Tuesday.
