Shaquem Griffin Not Picked on Day 2 of 2018 NFL Draft; Possible Landing Spots

Alec NathanApr 27, 2018

University of Central Florida linebacker Shaquem Griffin will need to wait until Saturday to hear his name called at the 2018 NFL draft.

After going undrafted during the first round on Thursday, as expected, Griffin sat patiently in the green room to no avail as the second and third rounds passed him by.

His attention will now be on Day 3, when teams will look to capitalize on his slide and scoop up one of this year's most compelling defensive prospects.

And based on evaluations, his wait to hear his name called may not last long Saturday.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller gave Griffin a fourth-round grade, while NFL Media's Gil Brandt has him as the 14th-best player left on the board.

Miller wrote the following in his predraft scouting report:

"Shaquem Griffin obviously meets the marks when it comes to competitive toughness and heart. Complications during pregnancy led to Griffin's left hand not developing fully. As a result, he had the hand amputated at the low forearm when he was four years old. Now, he's an above-average athlete who has all of the movement skills to be a weak-side 'backer in a 4-3 defense. There's no precedent for how the NFL might judge Griffin, but he's worth a comfortable mid-round pick."

Based on his production in college and his athletic testing scores, it's likely one team will fall in love with Griffin.

For starters, Griffin logged 166 total tackles and 18.5 sacks over his final two seasons at UCF. The 2016 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year also put on a show in front of all 32 teams at the combine, where he ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash and put up 20 bench press reps.

As far as potential landing spots are concerned, there are several teams slated to draft in Round 4 that could use his services.

The Los Angeles Rams, at pick No. 111 overall (11th in the fourth round), stand out at first glance after they shipped inside linebacker Alec Ogletree to the New York Giants in March.

Then there are the Philadelphia Eagles, who own pick Nos. 125 and 130. While they did just re-sign Nigel Bradham to a five-year deal, Jordan Hicks is coming off a torn Achilles and Mychal Kendricks has been a trade candidate for two years.

Finally, it's hard to ignore the Seattle Seahawks at pick No. 120.

Not only does Seattle employ Shaquem's brother, Shaquill, but Shaquem told The Rich Eisen Show the Seahawks were the only team to hold an official interview with the UCF standout at the combine.

There should be no shortage of suitors for the electric second-level speedster as he awaits the start of his NFL journey.

Possible Landing Spots: Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks.
