Baker Mayfield Won't Guarantee 1 Win Next Season on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'
Shortly after getting selected No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL draft on Thursday night, former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Kimmel jokingly asked Mayfield if he would guarantee winning at least one game next season, but Mayfield declined to do so, as seen in the following video (beginning at the 2:05 mark):
Mayfield smiled and laughed when Kimmel said that one win would be an improvement for a Browns team that finished 0-16 last season.
When asked about a guarantee, however, Mayfield said, "I'm not guaranteeing anything. It's gonna be good and I'm excited to get it rolling."
Cleveland had its pick of the litter at quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, as USC's Sam Darnold, Wyoming's Josh Allen and UCLA's Josh Rosen were also possibilities.
In the end, the Browns gravitated toward Mayfield's big-time production at the collegiate level.
The Austin, Texas, native completed 70.5 percent of his passes for 4,627 yards, 43 touchdowns and six interceptions last season en route to winning the Heisman Trophy.
While Mayfield's size (6'1" and 215 lbs.) has been questioned at times, the Browns are banking on the potential that he develops into a quarterback in the same mold as New Orleans Saints signal-caller Drew Brees.
Despite Cleveland's lack of recent success and the fact that it hasn't reached the playoffs since 2002, there likely won't be immediate pressure for Mayfield to start as a rookie.
The Browns acquired quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Buffalo Bills in an offseason trade, and after leading Buffalo to the playoffs last season, he has what it takes to hold down the starting job until Mayfield is ready.
Although Mayfield didn't want to guarantee a win, the Browns got much better this offseason with the acquisitions of Taylor, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, running back Carlos Hyde and cornerback Denzel Ward (with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft), so it is difficult to envision them going winless for a second consecutive year.
