2018 NFL Draft Rumors: Cardinals Interested in Moving Up 'For Right Price'
The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly considering opportunities to move up in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, which takes place Thursday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Mike Jurecki of Arizona Sports reported the Cards could trade up if a prospect they covet slides and it's the "right price." If they stand pat at No. 15, he lists Maryland wide receiver D.J. Moore, Notre Dame offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey and UCF cornerback Mike Hughes as options.
The Cardinals are one of the teams most frequently linked to moving up to choose one of the class' high-profile quarterback prospects. The Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots also fall into the category.
It sounds like Arizona may wait to see who's still available after what could be an initial frenzy with several QBs getting picked inside the top five.
Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Josh Allen (Wyoming), Sam Darnold (USC) and Josh Rosen (UCLA) headline the group. Lamar Jackson (Louisville) and Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State) could also land in the opening round.
The Cardinals, who lost Carson Palmer to retirement, signed injury-prone Sam Bradford as a stopgap option. They still need a long-term solution at the sport's most important position.
General manager Steve Keim told reporters during his pre-draft press conference choosing whether to trade up for a quarterback prospect isn't a simple decision:
"I think the biggest issue comes with the supply and demand at the position. Where is the franchise quarterback going to be available? If you're willing to trade, what’s the compensation for it?
"Are you willing to put the franchise in a position to be set back for years if you're not right? It can be crippling for us if we traded the next couple drafts to go get a player that's never taken a snap and doesn't have success."
Arizona hasn't tipped its hand about which of the quarterbacks it'd target in a potential trade up.
