Cowboys News: VP Stephen Jones Says Dallas Has 17 1st-Round Draft Grades
The Dallas Cowboys have completed their draft evaluations, and it doesn't seem as though they think too highly of the depth of the 2018 class.
Executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday the team has first-round grades on about 17 players, per Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
Dallas owns the No. 19 overall pick in Thursday's first round, which means the team might need to get a little lucky to get an elite player on its board.
On the other hand, the team could be willing to trade up to get an elite player if possible.
"If we get a really outstanding opportunity to do something really special for our team I would be giving that a lot of consideration," owner Jerry Jones said of making a deal, per Machota.
The Cowboys have only drafted a player in the top 20 four times in the last 11 years, but three of those players—Ezekiel Elliott, Zack Martin and Tyron Smith—have become first-team All-Pro players.
One factor that could help Dallas is the lack of need at quarterback with Dak Prescott proving himself in his first two seasons to be an adequate performer at the position. With as many as five quarterbacks being selected in the first round, it could push other top prospects further down the draft.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys have needs at all three levels of the defense, although the biggest hole might be at receiver. Dallas ranked 26th in passing last season and released Dez Bryant this offseason, creating a major need to provide Prescott with some help.
