Browns GM John Dorsey: 'All Options' on the Table at No. 1, Including Trade
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey confirmed Thursday that "all options" remain on the table regarding the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, according to Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot.
Dorsey said trading the pick is still a possibility, adding, "My phone—the power's still on," per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Dorsey expressed his belief that trade talk will likely intensify on the day of the draft next Thursday, according to Pelissero.
Cleveland is a logical candidate to take a quarterback with the top selection, but when asked by Cabot if he is considering Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, Dorsey said, "Absolutely. ... Why wouldn't I?"
Cleveland is coming off an 0-16 season, and it has won a grand total of one game over the past two campaigns.
The Browns have made several high-profile acquisitions this offseason, however, including wide receiver Jarvis Landry, quarterback Tyrod Taylor and running back Carlos Hyde.
While Taylor may be Cleveland's short-term answer under center, it needs a franchise signal-caller.
The Browns could wait until the No. 4 overall pick to take one, but with the New York Giants and New York Jets both having a need at quarterback and owning the second and third overall picks, respectively, the Browns may be compelled to choose a quarterback at No. 1.
If Cleveland goes in that direction, it will likely decide between USC's Sam Darnold, UCLA's Josh Rosen, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and Wyoming's Josh Allen.
Considering Cleveland still has many holes to fill on both sides of the ball, trading out of the No. 1 spot and still getting a promising quarterback at No. 4 while accumulating additional draft capital could be an enticing possibility as well.
Staying put at No. 1 and taking Barkley is also a worthwhile proposition since Barkley is widely considered the top overall prospect in the draft.
Even if Cleveland misses out on its top quarterback choice by taking Barkley No. 1 overall, it is a move that could still transform the Browns' previously moribund offense into a force.
In his latest mock draft, Bleacher Report's Matt Miller predicted that Cleveland will take Darnold with the top pick before still managing to land Barkley at No. 4.
