Yankees News: Don Mattingly Isn't Sure If Giancarlo Stanton Can Handle Boos

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly said he's not sure whether Giancarlo Stanton can handle the negativity that sometimes comes with playing for the New York Yankees.

Mattingly, who played his entire 14-year career with the Bronx Bombers, said Monday it's tough to gauge how a player will perform under the bright lights of New York City, per Brendan Kuty of NJ Advance Media.

"I think that's the one thing you never know. That's the only thing you really don't know," he said. "Anybody that comes to New York—I've seen a lot of guys come into New York from other organizations while I played here; it's just a different place. It's just not the same. So you've got go out and prove yourself on the field."

Stanton, who was acquired by the Yanks in a blockbuster offseason trade, opened his career with the organization by hitting two home runs in an Opening Day clash with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 28-year-old slugger has done virtually nothing since. He sports a .210/.310/.435 triple-slash line with three homers in 15 games. He's struck out 27 times in 62 at-bats.

That's led the Yankees faithful to boo him, and Mattingly said the 2017 National League MVP's terrific track record isn't enough to save him, per Kuty.

"You don't really have any money in the bank," Mattingly said. "You come here as a free agent; you have no collateral. You've got to go show it."

Stanton is currently playing on a 13-year, $325 million contract that runs through the 2028 season, per Spotrac. The slugger does have an opt-out clause after the 2020 season.

Stanton and the Yanks wrap up a brief two-game series against Mattingly and his former club Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
