NCAA Championship Game 2018: Complete Schedule for Michigan vs. Villanova

Kyle NewportMar 31, 2018

The stage has been set for the 2018 NCAA men's national title game.

The Michigan Wolverines defeated the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers, 69-57, in the first Final Four matchup on Saturday, with the Villanova Wildcats following up with a victory of their own over the Kansas Jayhawks, 95-79, in the night cap.

Now, it all comes down to two teams and one final game. The title game is set to tip off at 9:20 ET in San Antonio on Monday and will be aired on TBS.

Neither program is a stranger to the championship game. Michigan is just five years removed from a title-game appearance against Louisville, who has since vacated its championship. Villanova, of course, defeated North Carolina on a buzzer-beater two years ago to earn its second banner.

Michigan is battle-tested at this point, having won the Big Ten tournament and having only one NCAA tournament game that wasn't competitive throughout. Although, if not for a wild buzzer-beater in the second round against Houston, the Wolverines would not be here. However, along with blowing out Texas A&M, they have found ways to grind out victories against Montana, Florida State and Loyola-Chicago. Those may not be powerhouse programs, but they were no easy outs.

Moritz Wagner has become a March Madness star, highlighted by his 24-point, 15-rebound effort in the Final Four:

But it hasn't been just a one-man show for the squad from Ann Arbor. Charles Matthews (averaging 16.6 points in five tournament games), Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (scored 24 in the Sweet 16) and Jordan Poole (hit the game-winner against Houston) are among those who have also shined in the national spotlight.

As for the Wildcats, they still have players who were part of the 2015-16 title run, including AP National Player of the Year Jalen Brunson. They've been here before and aren't afraid of the moment—and that was apparent in the national semifinals against Kansas.

Villanoa tied the Final Four record for most three-pointers in a game...and that was before the game reached halftime. Ultimately, seven players combined for a record 18 triples en route to a 16-point victory over Kansas.

This NCAA tournament has been an opportunity for the Big East tournament champs to flex their muscles on the Big 12. After knocking off Radford and Alabama in the first two rounds, they have defeated three straight Big 12 opponents—West Virginia, Texas Tech and Kansas—to reach the championship game.

Jay Wright's squad is the highest-scoring team (86.6 points per game) in the nation, and that firepower has been on display at the Big Dance, where they've averaged 84.8 points per game. Meanwhile, other than a 99-point outlier against the Aggies, Michigan has averaged just 63 points per game this tournament. What a contrast in styles.

Only one team will cut down the nets on Monday night, and given each participant's respective resume, it should be a compelling showdown.
