Geno Smith Rumors: Ex-Giants QB to Visit Seahawks After Meeting with Chargers

Kyle NewportMar 29, 2018

After spending the first five years of his NFL career in New York, Geno Smith is exploring all of his options for his next chapter, which includes the West Coast.

Per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Smith visited the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday. That comes one day after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the former Jets and Giants quarterback visited the Los Angeles Chargers.

The former second-round pick spent four seasons in a Jets uniform, starting the first two years of his career. However, a 57.5 completion percentage, 34 interceptions and 16 fumbles in 30 games did not impress the team enough to stick with him under center.

Smith signed with the Giants last year. He joined the team as a backup, but he was controversially inserted into the starting lineup in December, replacing longtime starter Eli Manning. He completed 21 of his 34 pass attempts for 212 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in a 24-17 loss in Oakland.

Now, he is looking for another fresh start.

Seattle recently released backup Trevone Boykin amid an investigation into domestic violence allegations. That leaves Wilson and journeyman Austin Davis as the only passers on the roster. Oddly enough, Mark Sanchez—the signal-caller Smith was drafted to replace—has also been linked to the Seahawks, per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

With Wilson being the face of the franchise, Smith would not see the field in meaningful moments barring injury. The Seahawks are in the market for a backup, and although he has not proved himself to be able to consistently win football games, Smith has had enough success while starting that the team could feel comfortable calling his number if necessary.
