MLB Spring Training 2018: Latest Injury and Notable Fantasy News

Steve SilvermanMar 24, 2018

With the start of the season just days away, the San Francisco Giants got awful news Friday when left-handed starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner suffered a fractured pinkie on his pitching hand.

Bumgarner will have surgery on the finger on Saturday, and the first estimate is that he will miss four to six weeks as he recovers, according to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.

Justin Turner was one of the key linchpins of the Los Angeles Dodgers offense last year. The third baseman with the long red hair and an even more distinctive red beard is coming off an excellent 2017 season.

His old-school numbers were quite good, with 21 home runs and 71 runs batted in, and his slash line of .322/.415/.530 was also quite impressive. However, the Dodgers are going to have to start the season without his consistent bat in the lineup.

Turner broke his wrist when he was hit by a pitch on Monday in a game against the Oakland A's, and he is likely out until the early part of May. That means the Dodgers are likely to have Logan Forsythe in the lineup at third base for five to six weeks.

Daniel Murphy is still recovering from offseason surgery.

Daniel Murphy is unlikely to start the season as a healthy player for the Washington Nationals, and the star second baseman is still recovering from the microfracture surgery and knee debridement he had at the end of last season.

Murphy has been increasing his preparation to get back into the lineup, but he does not appear ready to start the season with the rest of his teammates in Cincinnati.

Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reported on March 21 that Murphy has not started running yet, and that could keep him off the lineup until he shows he can move around comfortably and run easily.

Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz of the Boston Red Sox is day-to-day with a forearm strain, according to Fox Sports. That website also reported that Milwaukee Brewers catcher Stephen Vogt is day-to-day with a shoulder strain and Seattle Mariners pitcher David Phelps is out for the season following surgery on his right elbow.

On the playing front, Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis smashed his second home run of spring training Friday in a game against the Rays. After missing time earlier this spring, the O's have been trying to get him more at bats to prepare for the season by batting him lead off.

Left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson of the Red Sox is making a bid for the starting rotation as a result of injuries to Pomeranz and Eduardo Rodriguez. Johnson pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in Friday's 5-0 victory over the New York Yankees.

Johnson has a 1.72 earned-run average in 15.2 innings and a 13-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
