Why Florida State Can Cover the Spread
The Seminoles reached Saturday's action by upsetting Gonzaga on Thursday night 75-60. FSU, as a six-point underdog, led by nine at the half and 13 early in the second half. The Seminoles let the Bulldogs move to within four points with eight minutes to go but pulled away down the stretch for the victory.
On the night, Florida State shot 47 percent from the field and held Gonzaga to just 34 percent shooting, including a five-for-20 performance from three-point land.
The Seminoles opened the NCAA tournament with a 67-54 win over Missouri, covering as one-point favorites, and then knocked off top-seeded Xavier 75-70 as five-point dogs. Florida State is 9-5 SU and 8-5-1 ATS this season against teams that made the Big Dance.
Why Michigan Can Cover the Spread
The Wolverines continued their recent hot roll by blowing out Texas A&M on Thursday night 99-72. Michigan scored the first five points of the game, and the rout was on from there. They led by 29 shortly before halftime and never by less than 18 after that in a dominant performance.
Michigan shot a blazing 62 percent from the floor, made 14 of 24 from beyond the arc and turned the ball over just six times against what was supposedly a good Aggies defense.
The Wolverines also held their opponent to under 50 percent field-goal shooting for the 13th straight game.
John Beilein's squad opened this tournament with a 61-47 win over Montana, covering a 10-point spread, and then edged Houston 64-63 on a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. Michigan is 12-0 SU and 10-2 ATS over its past dozen games and 9-4 SU and 10-3 ATS on the season against teams that made the NCAA tournament.
Smart Betting Pick
The Wolverines are hot again, but performances like Thursday night's often lead to letdowns the next time out. At the very least, it's unlikely Michigan will shoot 62 percent again anytime soon. The Seminoles, meanwhile, are playing some good grind-it-out ball, using defense and depth. The smart money here takes the points with Florida State.
March Madness Betting Trends
Michigan is 2-6 ATS in its past eight games against the ACC.
Michigan is 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in its past five games as a favorite of 4.5 points or less.
Florida State is 3-11 SU and 4-10 ATS in its past 14 games against the Big Ten.
