Kansas Hangs on vs. Seton Hall in 2018 NCAA Tournament; Malik Newman Drops 28

Malik Newman scored 28 points as the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks beat the No. 8 Seton Hall Pirates 83-79 in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday.

The Jayhawks withstood phenomenal games from Seton Hall center Angel Delgado and guard Khadeen Carrington. Delgado posted 24 points and 23 rebounds and joined an impressive list with his performance, according to ESPN Stats & Info:

Carrington had 28 points and kept his team in the game by scoring 13 straight Pirates points in just 53 seconds near the end of the second half.

It was the Delgado show in the first 20 minutes, as he hit the double-double mark with 5:16 left in the first half. The senior went 5-of-10 from the field, while the rest of the Pirates made just five field goals combined.

Delgado also had four offensive boards, which was as many as the entire KU team after 20 minutes. His layup also gave Seton Hall the lead at 22-20:

Newman led KU with 10 points, and his three-pointer to end the half turned out to be a crucial bucket:

KU needed his production, as season-long scoring leader Devonte' Graham (17.6 points per game) struggled. CJ Moore of Bleacher Report provided more insight:

KU was up 15-6 at the 11:37 mark, but Seton Hall's Michael Nzei tied the game on a dunk at 20 with 6:06 before halftime. Two Delgado buckets put Hall up four, but two Newman threes, two Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk layups and a Udoka Azubuike free throw helped KU take a 31-26 lead into the break.

Kansas maintained its lead in the second half, going up by as many as 13 points following a Lagerald Vick three-pointer to put KU on top 52-39 with 12:21 left.

However, Seton Hall wouldn't go away, as Carrington scored 21 of his 28 points in just under 12 minutes. During that span, he brought Seton Hall to within three points on two separate occasions with 20 and 13 seconds left, respectively.

Kansas was perfect from the free throw line down the stretch, though, as it hit all six of its attempts from the charity stripe.

Although the game was much closer than KU would have liked, the Jayhawks' ability to withstand Seton Hall's best punch and win was impressive. Graham did not have his best game (nine assists but just eight points and one field goal), but it was noteworthy that KU could win a big tournament game despite him having an off-night.

Aside from Newman's 28 points, Mykhailiuk posted 16, while Vick had 13. Azubuike was also fantastic off the bench, amassing 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 22 minutes. As a team, the Jayhawks made 50 percent of their field goals and 9-of-21 three-pointers.

The Jayhawks will face the winner of No. 4 Auburn vs. No. 5 Clemson in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Omaha, Nebraska. A time has not been announced.

Seton Hall finishes its season with a 22-12 record.
