Providence

Any of the Big East teams could make a run in the NCAA tournament, but few are seeded as low as No. 10 Providence.

The Friars, who had one of the more up-and-down resumes of any at-large team, created momentum for themselves in the Big East tournament, as they achieved their second win over Xavier.

Ed Cooley's team sits in a dangerous position against a No. 7 seed in Texas A&M that also experienced a topsy-turvy SEC campaign.

Providence comes into the Big Dance as a battle-tested team with victories over Xavier and Villanova, as well as a pair of overtime triumphs at Madison Square Garden.

Unlike the seventh-seeded Aggies, the Friars gained more big-game experience in their conference tournament, which is something that can only benefit them.

The trio of Rodney Bullock, Alpha Diallo and Kyron Cartwright thrived at the Big East tournament, and they are expected to wreak more havoc on the Aggies defense.

In the overtime defeat to Villanova in the Big East tournament final, the trio combined for 51 of the team's 66 points, with Diallo leading the charge with 22 points.

Texas A&M is one of a few power-conference teams that experienced a lull in form throughout February, as it lost four of its last seven games, with its wins coming during that span against Vanderbilt, Georgia and Alabama, all of whom finished in the bottom half of the SEC standings.

While the Aggies have quality wins on their side over Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, they don't have the impressive victories like Providence contains over a pair of No. 1 seeds.

South Dakota State

No. 12 South Dakota State is in position to win one of the top individual matchups of the round of 64 thanks to forward Mike Daum.

Daum is one of the top mid-major players you need to follow throughout the tournament, and he could challenge Keita Bates-Diop of No. 5 Ohio State down low.

Another factor playing into the hands of the Jackrabbits is the location of the contest, as the game is being played in Boise, Idaho, due to the presence of No. 4 Gonzaga in their pod.

With Ohio State not benefiting from a massive home-court advantage, the Jackrabbits could feed off a neutral crowd that cheers for an upset.

As for Daum, he averages 23.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest, and he is a matchup nightmare with his presence around the three-point line as well.

If he draws Bates-Diop out of the paint, Daum could open the door for the Jackrabbits to pick up more offensive rebounds, and there are plenty of players who can take advantage of that space.

Tevin King and Reed Tellinghuisen hauled in over 4.5 rebounds per game, while four other South Dakota State players average over three boards per contest.

Just like a few other upset-minded teams, the Jackrabbits come into the first-round clash with plenty of confidence and they face an Ohio State team that last played March 2 and lost to Penn State in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.

New Mexico State

You're going to have to wait until the final cluster of games Friday night to fall in love with No. 12 New Mexico State, but it will be worth the wait.

The Aggies reside in a part of the Midwest bracket that could be theirs for the taking to set up an unexpected showdown with No. 1 Kansas in the Sweet 16.

The WAC regular-season and tournament champion went 28-5, with two of its losses coming against quality opposition in Saint Mary's and USC in nonconference play.

New Mexico State also displayed the ability to bounce back against adversity, as it followed back-to-back defeats in the middle of February with a six-game winning streak that ended with the capture of the WAC automatic bid.

The X-factor for the Aggies against No. 5 Clemson will be Jemerrio Jones, who averages a double-double with 13.2 rebounds and 11 points per game.

LAS VEGAS, NV - MARCH 10: Jemerrio Jones #10 of the New Mexico State Aggies posts up against Gerard Martin #42 of the Grand Canyon Lopes during the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference basketball tournament at the Orleans Arena on March 1

While Clemson boasts five players averaging over 10 points per game, it carries two players who average over six rebounds per game.

With a player not as dominant as Jones on the roster, the Tigers could struggle around the rim, which may lead to more second-chance opportunities for the Aggies to grab hold of the momentum in key stretches.
