Report: Rangers Agree to Contract with Cuban Prospect Julio Pablo Martinez

Cuban prospect Julio Pablo Martinez has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Texas Rangers. 

Per Baseball America's Ben Badler, Martinez will receive a $2.8 million signing bonus from the Rangers. 

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan noted an official announcement is expected soon. 

Martinez defected from Cuba in November with the goal of playing in Major League Baseball. MLB cleared him last month, and Tuesday was the first day he was eligible to sign with a team.

A 21-year-old outfielder, Martinez ranked No. 2 on MLB.com's international prospects list for 2017. The scouting report highlighted his "speed on the bases and in the outfield and his above-average power."

Badler noted Martinez has the skill set to start this season in High-A or Double-A, and that he would slot in at No. 60 on this year's Baseball America top 100 prospects list.
