Virginia Tech Stuns No. 2 Virginia in 61-60 Overtime Upset

The Virginia Tech Hokies (18-7, 7-5) bolstered their NCAA tournament resume in a big way Saturday night when they stunned the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers, 61-60, in overtime at John Paul Jones Arena.

The upset, which was capped by a go-ahead layup from Kerry Blackshear Jr. with eight seconds remaining in the extra session, snapped Virginia's 15-game winning streak that dated back to Dec. 16.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, the Hokies have positioned themselves to hear their names called on Selection Sunday:

Virginia (23-2, 12-1), meanwhile, squandered a chance to move up to No. 1 in next week's Associated Press Top 25 poll following Villanova's loss to St. John's on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers led by five points with 39 seconds left in overtime, but a Blackshear bucket and Nickeil Alexander-Walker's triple allowed the Hokies to climb within one point.

Virginia guard Devon Hall proceeded to miss the front end of a one-and-one with an opportunity to put the Cavaliers up three, and Blackshear answered on the other end by crashing the offensive glass and depositing the game-winner through traffic.

The Hokies tallied 12 points in the five-minute extra session, which was remarkable considering they sputtered their way to 16 total in the second half.

Blackshear finished with seven points and six rebounds, while Justin Robinson led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting.

"I think us never giving up is a huge step for our program," Robinson said after the win, according to the team's official Twitter account.

Virginia Tech also locked up the Cavaliers' trio of sharpshooting guards, with Hall (16 points), Kyle Guy (13 points) and Ty Jerome (11 points) combined to shoot 14-of-47 from the floor, including 9-of-34 from three, against a unit that entered the night ranked 98th in KenPom.com's adjusted defensive efficiency.

"We got some open looks and we shot some that were maybe bad ones but it is what it is," Virginia head coach Tony Bennett told reporters.

The Cavaliers will be back in action Tuesday against the Miami Hurricanes, while the Hokies have a showdown against the Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium looming Wednesday evening.
