Why the Mountaineers can cover the spread

The Mountaineers won the first meeting between the teams 89-76 and covered the spread easily as 5.5-point home chalk back on January 6, according to the OddsShark College Basketball Database. Since then, they have struggled a bit, going 3-5 both straight up and against the spread.

But their defense did a solid job on Oklahoma's Trae Young the first time around. In that game, Young totaled 29 points but made just 8-of-22 shots from the field, including 3-of-12 from three-point range, with eight turnovers.

Why the Sooners can cover the spread

Young has obviously been the key for the Sooners this season, as the freshman remains one of the best players in the country despite some bumps in the road. In his last three home games, Young has averaged nearly 38 points, but more importantly shot better than 50 percent in each of them.

Oklahoma as a team has also averaged 95 points in those games and found a way to win close ones, with the average margin of victory sitting at only four points. In this case, that would be enough for another cover.

Smart betting pick

The Sooners are coming off a 79-74 road loss to the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, while the Mountaineers ended a three-game losing streak with an 89-51 rout of the Kansas State Wildcats.

Both teams have slumped recently but still have a shot at the Big 12 title, with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Kansas Jayhawks each one game ahead in the conference standings.

In other words, this is a big matchup. Even though West Virginia has lost three in a row on the road, this team has more veterans and has what it takes to pull off the upset. Take the Mountaineers to get the sweep.

College basketball betting trends

West Virginia is 2-4 ATS in its last six games.
