Twitter Reacts to Vince McMahon's XFL Relaunch Announcement

Andrew GouldJan 25, 2018

WWE chairman Vince McMahon announced the XFL's return Thursday afternoon.

He revealed his plan to recreate an eight-team league with play beginning in 2020. Although the first  league ended after one season in 2001, he stressed a commitment to creating a higher quality of football while emphasizing player safety this time around.

Twitter immediately began guessing which players would headline the XFL. The most common suggestions, unsurprisingly, were Tim Tebow and Johnny Manziel:

McMahon, however, threw a wrench into the highly popular Manziel suggestion by saying players with any criminal record will not be welcome. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback was charged with a misdemeanor assault in a case that was dismissed in November.

Former NFL backup quarterback Jared Lorenzen also made his case for a job:

Others noted McMahon's hypocrisy in calling a three-hour NFL game "laborious" despite Monday Night Raw running the same time every week:

The XFL's revival likely caught many onlookers off guard. Not Homer Simpson:

Now that the XFL is coming back, why not re-create another unorthodox sports league?

For better or worse, McMahon has everyone's attention.
