NFL Mock Draft 2018: Latest Post-Super Bowl Predictions for 1st Round

Alec NathanFeb 5, 2018

The 2018 NFL draft order is officially set.

While 30 spots had been decided entering Super Bowl LII, barring a coin-flip to determine who would make the ninth and 10th picks, the Philadelphia Eagles' 41-33 win over the New England Patriots at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis locked things into place before the Cleveland Browns are on the clock at No. 1 overall April 26.

With the 2017 NFL season in the books and all 32 teams deep into draft preparations as the scouting combine fast approaches, it's time to take a look at a fresh first-round mock draft.

Denver Broncos: Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

The Denver Broncos may well address the quarterback position through free agency, but it's hard to be certain.

If they don't, Oklahoma Sooners signal-caller and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield makes plenty of sense.

For starters, Mayfield's stock has been rising since the start of his final season with the Sooners—a campaign in which he completed 70.5 percent of his passes for 4,627 yards, 43 touchdowns and six interceptions.

On top of that, the Broncos got a close look at him during Senior Bowl week since he was a member of the North team that was led by Denver's coaching staff.

With extra time to evaluate Mayfield, head coach Vance Joseph made it clear he wasn't worried about the quarterback's 6'1" stature.

"I think that's fine," Joseph said, according to the Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala. "You watch Drew Brees play. He's figured it out. He's a very successful quarterback. Guys figure it out. Good players figure it out. I wouldn't be concerned about that."

Wyoming's Josh Allen could garner consideration as well thanks to his raw arm talent, but Mayfield's superior polish and big-game experience should give him the edge.

New York Jets: Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State

GLENDALE, AZ - DECEMBER 30: Running back Saquon Barkley #26 of the Penn State Nittany Lions rushes the football against the Washington Huskies during the second half of the Playstation Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium on December 30, 2017 in

With Mayfield off the board, the New York Jets will have plenty of options to explore at No. 6 overall.

In this scenario, though, there's one player who stands out above the rest: former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

While the Jets aren't exactly stable under center, their backfield has been something of a muddled mess of late. That much was clear last season, when the Jets alternated between Matt Forte, Bilal Powell and Elijah McGuire in a rotation that churned out a 19th-ranked 106.4 rushing yards per game.

With that in mind, it's no surprise ESPN.com's Rich Cimini noted Barkley would "be ideal for the Jets, who desperately need a consistent, breakaway threat in the backfield. Bilal Powell broke some long runs in 2017, but he's not an every-down back, and he turns 30 in October."

New York could also look to shore up its offensive line after allowing 47 sacks and managing a subpar 4.0 yards per carry last season.

But considering Barkley is a transformative talent who has one of the most unique blends of size and speed in recent memory, the Jets could change the complexion of their offense instantly by bringing the Nittany Lions standout into the fold.

Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

Tyrod Taylor's future with the Buffalo Bills is murky, to say the least. That means the 2017 AFC wild-card qualifiers should be in the market for a quarterback.

And with two first-round picks, the Bills can afford to gamble a bit.

Enter Allen, who is the most divisive quarterback in this year's first-round conversation.

While it's clear Allen has tremendous size (6'5", 233 pounds) and arm strength that allows him to rip the ball from sideline to sideline, he completed just 56.2 percent of his passes over three years at Wyoming.

Those accuracy concerns have been amplified by the fact Allen was playing against Mountain West Conference competition as opposed to stronger Power Five defenses. Plus, Allen flashed concerning gunslinger tendencies and too often forced throws into coverage.

That combination of traits won't be easy for teams to trust if they are drafting in the top half of Round 1. However, a team like the Bills, who have a pair of picks, will have the luxury of some wiggle room and should be willing to invest in Allen's high ceiling as they attempt to identify their signal-caller of the future.
