NFL Draft 2018: Updated Order and 1st-Round Mock Draft Predictions

Joe TanseyJan 8, 2018

The NFL draft prospects on the Alabama and Georgia rosters have one more chance to add to their respective resumes in Monday's College Football Playoff National Championship Game that starts at 8 p.m. ET.

Once a national champion is determined, the highly touted underclassmen on each roster have six days to declare for the draft. Once that deadline passes, the evaluation process will heat up.

The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs players may not be receiving as much buzz as the coveted group of quarterbacks right now, but there's a good chance some of them will be among the highest picks in April.

NFL Prospects to Watch in CFP National Championship

Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama

Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick could be the highest defensive player drafted because of his versatility.

Fitzpatrick is listed as a safety, but the 6'1", 202-pound junior has no problem dropping into the box and turning into a rusher from the linebacker position.

The junior will be a defensive back at the next level, but the assets he's shown on the blitz make him an intriguing option for the teams in the top 10. It also doesn't hurt that he has the Alabama pedigree helping boost his stock.

The team that selects Fitzpatrick could use him like the Jacksonville Jaguars utilize Jalen Ramsey, who is a similar player to the Alabama defensive back.

What you should watch from Fitzpatrick on Monday night is how much he joins the front seven as the Crimson Tide look to stop Georgia's dominant running attack and put pressure on quarterback Jake Fromm.

Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama

Teams looking for a deep threat in the first round would be wise to look at Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

Ridley has stood out in Alabama's offense this season because he is its only experienced big-play threat. The Crimson Tide have a bevy of young receivers ready to take over for Ridley when he leaves, but on Monday night, the senior is expected to receive a bundle of targets from quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Although he is one of the top receivers in this draft class, some teams may turn away from Ridley because he'll turn 24 in his rookie season. Certain suitors may pass on Ridley in an attempt to go after a younger receiver whom they believe could make an impact for a longer period of time.

Ridley would be a solid option for the Chicago Bears at the No. 8 pick as they look to find quarterback Mitchell Trubisky a reliable target whom he can build chemistry with over the next few years.

Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith has done nothing but help his draft stock in December and January.

Smith, who finished 10th in the Heisman Trophy voting, has inspired the Georgia defense to wins in the SEC Championship Game and Rose Bowl, and there's a good chance he'll be swarming all over the field Monday as he looks to break up any rhythm Alabama tries to create in the ground game.

After the quarterbacks go off the board, there's a group of teams in the middle of the first round that will be hunting for defensive prospects.

The Washington Redskins, who select 13th, have found success recently with linebackers from the SEC, with Preston Smith coming from Mississippi State and Martrell Spaight from Arkansas.

Being able to learn the craft at the professional level under an experienced veteran like Ryan Kerrigan would be invaluable for Smith. Washington may have a nice surplus at linebacker already, but it might be hard to pass up on Smith, especially if he continues to trend upward.
