NFL Picks Week 8: Latest Odds, Prop Bets, Over-Under Lines and Predictions

Richard JanvrinOct 24, 2017

Though they're the defending NFC champions, the Atlanta Falcons sure do look like a team trying to figure out this offense thing as of late.

The Falcons have lost three straight games, all against the AFC East, including a Week 7 shellacking by the team that downed them in the Super Bowl—the New England Patriots.

In Week 8, they'll have yet another AFC East showdown, this time with the Jets.

Speaking of perennial Super Bowl threats, the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off two straight losses after starting 5-0. They were beat by the Pittsburgh Steelers and lost on literally the last play against the Oakland Raiders.

They'll have a chance to right the ship against a sputtering Denver Broncos team.

How will the rest of the league do?

Week 8 Odds and Predictions

Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens

Date and Time: Thursday, October 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Ravens -2.5, 37.5 O/U

This is going to be a hell of a game to get through as a viewer.

The Dolphins have the better offense on paper, but they will have quarterback Matt Moore leading them into Baltimore against an aggressive Ravens defense.

No, Moore can't be any worse than Jay Cutler, but it's a lateral upgrade at best.

I'm not a fan of either offense, but I'll side with the Ravens defense pulling this one out narrowly.

Pick: Baltimore 17, Miami 13

Minnesota Vikings at Cleveland Browns

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 9:30 a.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Vikings -7.5, 37.5 O/U

Assuming Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs is back, the Browns defense will have no answer for him.

The Browns have been playing quarterback carousel over the past two weeks, starting Kevin Hogan and DeShone Kizer. And now it looks like they'll start Cody Kessler for this London affair.

Kizer may have made a lot of mistakes as a rookie, but I'm not that much more confident in Kessler, especially against this Vikings defense.

Outside of running back Duke Johnson, there's no one on offense to be wary of.

Browns don't reach double-digits here.

Pick: Vikings 27, Browns 7

San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Eagles -10.5, NL O/U

This is not a matter of whether the Eagles will win but by how much.

After beating the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football, the Eagles now own the NFL's best record at 6-1.

If Week 7 was any indication for how the 49ers team will look with C.J. Beathard, this is going to be a bloodbath.

Eagles win big. Book it.

Pick: Eagles 31, 49ers 7

Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Patriots -7, 49 O/U

What this game will boil down to is whether or not the Chargers offense can keep up with the Patriots offense.

The Patriots defense is, well, not good, for lack of a better term, and the Chargers defense is about average.

With Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa on their side, the Chargers should be able to pressure Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to the point of preventing him from totally ripping them apart.

We've seen the Patriots win a close game against the Houston Texans and lose a close game against the Carolina Panthers. The Chargers offense led by Philip Rivers keeps this one close enough in a shootout.

Pick: Patriots 36, Chargers 30

Oakland Raiders at Buffalo Bills

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Buffalo -3, 46 O/U

Coming off a thrilling victory over their division rival Kansas City Chiefs, the Raiders will head into New Era Field against the Bills.

This Bills defense may not be filled with a ton of household names, but they have a stout defense that will cause issues for Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and hold their own against the wide receiving duo of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.

Offensively, the Bills aren't anything to brag about, but the same can be said for the Raiders.

Between the playmaking abilities of quarterback Tyrod Taylor and running back LeSean McCoy, the Bills will do what's needed to down the Raiders in their place.

Pick: Bills 24, Raiders 14

Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Buccaneers -2.5, 44 O/U

If I'm betting in Week 8, I'm avoiding this game because this could go either way, as the spread indicates.

Comparing the offense, you give the edge to the Buccaneers because of their receiving options and their running game, but the Panthers have a bit of an unknown in quarterback Cam Newton—some games he's on, others he's just not.

The Buccaneers have a tendency to get beat up by pass-catching running backs, and the Panthers have a solid one in Christian McCaffrey.

I'll give the edge to the home team here, but I'm not feeling great about it.

Pick: Buccaneers 23, Panthers 19

Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Falcons -4.5, 46.5 O/U

This is a nice spread for this game. It shows respect to the Jets.

Whether or not you like the Jets, they're staying competitive in games. And if you like the Jets, you wish they could have put Week 7 away against the Miami Dolphins.

Defensively, the Jets don't get enough credit. They don't get enough credit offensively either—but like it or not, they're scoring points.

The Falcons offense is odd. They're just not able to score points lately, averaging under 14 points per game—all against AFC East opponents.

Until the Falcons decide to utilize wide receiver Julio Jones more, my confidence in them is shrinking. They're not the same offensive juggernaut.

Upset alert.

Pick: Jets 26, Falcons 23

Indianapolis Colts at Cincinnati Bengals

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Bengals -10, 41 O/U

Although they're at home, I'm hard-pressed to give the Bengals 10 points under any circumstance.

Point blank: They're just not that good.

No, the Colts aren't a good football team either, but quarterback Jacoby Brissett deserves some credit.

The Colts have playmakers in wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Marlon Mack (who they need to deploy more), too.

For the Bengals, their offense, including wide receiver A.J. Green and running back Joe Mixon, presents mismatches for a lowly Colts defense. But I'm not ready to lay a 10 spot to the Bengals this season against anyone.

Pick: Bengals 27, Colts 19

Chicago Bears at New Orleans Saints

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Saints -7.5, 48 O/U

Eventually, Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky is going to need to throw the ball in a football game. He's thrown 16 or fewer passes in two straight games, with only seven in Week 7.

The Bears defense shut down the Panthers offense and returned two Cam Newton turnovers for a touchdown. But that won't happen against the Saints.

Although they have a nice defense, the Bears will have their work cut out for them against Drew Brees.

Trubisky won't be able to keep up with Brees offensively, and the Saints defense is good enough that it'll force Trubisky to make some mistakes.

Saints win handily.

Pick: Saints 26, Bears 13

Houston Texans at Seattle Seahawks

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 4:05 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Seahawks -5.5, 42.5 O/U

I'll be straightforward here: I'm going with the underdog Texans in an upset.

Something is wrong with the Seahawks offense. They got lucky on a big play down the field in Week 7 against the Giants, and it took them almost all game long to finally get anything going.

This Texans offense has been rolling, and while the Seahawks have been known to have a ferocious defense, it's not quite the same.

Missing key pass-rushers for the Texans will be a deterrent, but this Seahawks offensive line couldn't block me, never mind Jadeveon Clowney.

And, oh, it helps that the Texans will have left tackle Duane Brown back, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Another upset alert.

Pick: Texans 27, Seahawks 20

Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 4:25 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Redskins -1.5, NL O/U

One thing is for sure: This is going to be a hell of a game.

Now knowing that Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will play does change things slightly in the Cowboys' favor.

However, the Redskins defense has been great all year, though they did get beat up by the Eagles in Week 7.

This Redskins pass rush will provide the Cowboys offensive line quite the task, and the Cowboys secondary will have trouble containing the multiple threats the Redskins throw at them.

Home team wins.

Pick: Redskins 27, Cowboys 17

Pittsburgh Steelers at Detroit Lions

Date and Time: Sunday, October 29 at 8:30 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Steelers -3, 45 O/U

Coming off a bye, the Lions will be at home to host the Steelers.

To be honest, I'm not sure how the Steelers are favorites here.

OK, they have wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le'Veon Bell, but I'm not trusting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, especially on the road.

The Lions have a defense with a great secondary and a pass rush that should give this Steelers offensive line plenty of fits.

That's not to say the Steelers don't have a sufficiently fine defense—they do. But I'll take my chances with the Lions defense at home and coming off a bye against a quarterback who is sloppy on the road.

Expect a defensive touchdown or big play to shift the tide in this game.

Pick: Lions 23, Steelers 21

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs

Date and Time: Monday, October 30 at 8:30 p.m. ET

Spread and Over/Under Total: Chiefs -7, 44 O/U

Considering my confidence level in the Denver Broncos defense is near zero, you can tell who I'm siding with here.

Defensively, the Broncos are still great, but they can only do so much.

The Chiefs are coming off two straight losses and get a few extra days of rest against a division rival.

And they're at home.

The Chiefs offense lacks nothing, and while the Broncos defense may be enough to scare you away, the Broncos lack of offense is what will be their demise.

Their quarterback, Trevor Siemian, isn't the same guy who threw four touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys earlier this season.

Chiefs get over the hump and pick up their sixth win.

Pick: Chiefs 20, Broncos 7
