2018 No. 1 Recruit Marvin Bagley Reportedly Files to Reclassify to 2017

Marvin Bagley, the top prospect in the 2018 college basketball recruiting class, has reportedly filed paperwork with the NCAA Eligibility Center in an effort to reclassify as a member of the 2017 class.

On Friday, Evan Daniels of Scout noted the request will "review and evaluate his academic standing" to see if he'd be eligible to make the late switch into this year's incoming group.

Even if the coveted power forward is given clearance to change his status, it doesn't mean he's going to make the switch, though.

Wildcat Country‏ noted last week it remained "likely" Bagley will stick with the 2018 class. His father, Marvin Bagley Jr., also downplayed the idea of reclassification during an interview with Adam Zagoria of FanRag Sports back in mid-July.

"Hey, ask the guy who started the rumor, they know more than what I can tell you," the elder Bagley said.

Bagley is a 5-star prospect rated as the No. 1 overall recruit among next year's group, according to the Scout player rankings. It's unclear where he'd land among a talented 2017 class that already features the likes of DeAndre Ayton and Michael Porter, though.

Scout lists Duke and USC as the leading contenders for the offensively gifted forward, with Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky also involved in the sweepstakes, making for quite a recruiting battle. It would become even more intense if he decides to make the early jump.

Looking ahead, it's unclear how long it will take the NCAA Eligibility Center to make a ruling about the case. But there are just over three months until the start of the 2017-18 season, so Bagley would be forced to make a quick decision if given clearance.

One thing's for sure: He has all the makings of a one-and-done college superstar. The only questions are whether it happens starting in 2017 or 2018, and where he'll put his talents on display.
