Wimbledon Tennis 2017 Women's Final: Early Garbine Muguruza US Open Predictions

Rob BlanchetteJul 15, 2017

Garbine Muguruza dismantled Venus Williams in the final of Wimbledon 2017 and will hope to secure the third Grand Slam of her career at the U.S. Open.

The tournament begins on August 28 at Flushing Meadows in New York, and the Spaniard will be attempting to swell her trophy haul after defeating Williams 7-5, 6-0 in London.

Muguruza was only the No. 14 seed at Wimbledon after an inconsistent year, but expectations will be high during the final slam of the campaign.

Predictions

Before the advent of Wimbledon, pundits did not see Muguruza as the potential champion. But as star names fell to defeat, her stock grew at the All England Club.

Grass courts have plenty of bounce and speed, so Saturday's victory is an excellent sign for the Spaniard as she prepares for action on New York's hard courts, which will not require a huge adjustment.

ESPN highlighted that the player has become the first to topple both Williams sisters in Grand Slam finals:

Power is one of her great assets, and the hard courts at Flushing Meadows will give her an advantage over the field. Muguruza is naturally tall with a huge wingspan, and her mobility will make her difficult to beat on American soil.

Karolina Pliskova will be the Spaniard's biggest challenger at the U.S. Open, and the Czech Republic star has improved in the past 12 months. However, she is yet to make a significant dent at a Grand Slam and exited in the second round at Wimbledon 2017.

Pliskova has proved to be a quality player on the tour, but she is yet to fulfill her true potential despite reaching the final in New York in 2016, losing in three sets to Angelique Kerber.

Muguruza has the edge in this department, and her treatment of Williams was aggressive and ruthless.

She took advantage of her opponent's ageing legs, and once she had gained tactical control, she never stopped moving forward.

Her game from the baseline is world class, and the likes of Kerber and Simona Halep do not possess her strength and versatility.

The Wimbledon champion's statistics are improving, and she outclassed Williams when many believed she would fail.

According to Wimbledon.comMuguruza won 77 per cent of points on her first serve in the final, and her consistency of approach has returned in full.

The player is riding a crest of a wave, and she will truly believe a third slam is within her reach.

Injuries have affected many top-class players in recent weeks, but Muguruza has stayed fit enough to climb the mountain after a difficult year.

The Spanish star should expect to at least make the final in America and potentially take the next step towards a trophy-laden career.
