Roger Federer Advances to Wimbledon Quarter-Finals with Win vs. Grigor Dimitrov

Gianni VerschuerenJul 10, 2017

Roger Federer continued his impeccable run through the 2017 Wimbledon tournament on Monday, easily beating Grigor Dimitrov in three sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Dimitrov gave Federer a bit of a challenge early but could barely make inroads on his serve, breaking just once in the final set. The seven-time champion was never troubled on his way to the quarter-finals.

The Bulgarian came into the match with plenty of momentum after a solid run in the previous rounds, and he continued to impress early, more than holding his own against the tournament favourite.

Federer managed to battle his way to a couple of break chances but ran into powerful serves every time, and for eight straight games, the opening set was competitive. BBC's Richard Osman loved it:

But in the ninth game, FedExpress took advantage of an ill-timed double-fault to put real pressure on his opponent and notch his first break. A hold for love handed him the set in the next game.

Dimitrov appeared to fade early in the second set, with another wild forehand handing Federer the advantage yet again. Per Live Tennis, the Swiss veteran was virtually perfect, and everything was going to plan:

A second break in the seventh game set Federer up to serve out the set once again, and while Dimitrov did save two set points after falling into a 40-0 hole, the third try proved the charm.

Down two sets, the Bulgarian seemed to lose heart in the match, and Federer duly took advantage by grabbing another quick break. Per Live Tennis, it was hardly a challenge:

But Dimitrov wasn't ready to give up just yet. In the eighth game, the underdog threw caution to the wind with several big groundstrokes, and against all odds, he broke back to give himself a chance.

Unfortunately for the Bulgarian, Federer had no interest in playing a fourth set, breaking straight back to move within a single game of the next round. While he couldn't convert his first match point, an unforced error from Dimitrov on the second did the trick.
