Wimbledon 2017: Tuesday London Schedule and Bracket Predictions

Tom SunderlandJul 10, 2017

The women of Wimbledon will take centre stage—and Centre Court—on Tuesday as the men take a break from singles competition after seeing the quarter-final fixtures come close to completion.

There is one exception in the men's singles, however, as Novak Djokovic and Adrian Mannarino prepare to face off after seeing their fourth-round match delayed by Gilles Muller's five-hour win over Rafael Nadal on Monday.

The ladies' last eight has already been decided, however, and Britain's Johanna Konta will have the pleasure of taking on the tournament's highest remaining seed, Simona Halep, to fight for a place in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, shock French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, 20, will take on Venus Williams, an opponent 17 years her senior, and Garbine Muguruza will face Svetlana Kuznetsova seeking another highly seeded victory.

As well as Williams, the United States have a second quarter-final entrant in Coco Vandeweghe, whose upcoming opponent, Magdalena Rybarikova, is the only unseeded player remaining in the tournament.

Read on for a look toward Tuesday's schedule and predictions for who we'll see make it to the competition's penultimate stage.

Wimbledon provided a provisional preview of Centre Court's schedule for Tuesday:

Preview

The sole men's singles matchup on display on Tuesday should provide a routine win for Djokovic against unseeded Mannarino, although the latter has beaten seeded Gael Monfils and Feliciano Lopez to reach this point.

Even with that resume, however, Djokovic is yet to surrender a set or step out of second gear at this competition thus far, although tennis reporter Eleanor Crooks hinted at some underlying frustrations with his match's postponement:

A maiden Wimbledon quarter-final awaits Konta on Tuesday, but she'll come up against an opponent far more well-versed when it comes to competing in these latter stages of majors, world No. 2 Halep.

Her 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Victoria Azarenka on Monday saw Halep collect her fourth consecutive straight-set victory at SW19, and Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times told of more motivation for the Romanian frontrunner:

But while Halep may boast the highest seeding of any player still left in the women's singles, Konta proved with a three-set victory against Caroline Garcia on Monday that she can duke it out with the elite.

It was less than a fortnight since Charlie Eccleshare of the Telegraph reported a spinal injury forced Konta out of the Aegon International and could still be troubling her, although one would never have guessed she was hurt in her post-match interview with BBC Sport:

That said, Halep's powerful approach will be unlike anything the home favourite—the second-highest seed left at No. 6—has faced thus far as the favourite prepares for her second Wimbledon quarter in as many years.

No. 14 seed Muguruza also faces an uphill battle against 32-year-old Russian Kuznetsova, although her 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against world No. 1 Angelique Kerber indicated she's not one for rankings, via BBC 5 live Sport:

Much of this battle will come down to merely who plays the better grass game on the day, with Muguruza making her second quarter-final appearance while Kuznetsova prepares for her fourth—albeit her first since 2007.

Ostapenko's clash with Williams promises to be a memorable one for nostalgists, who may remember a young American making her Wimbledon debut in June 1997, the same month in which this year's French Open winner was born.

Almost as if it were fated to be, the pair will collide in a battle of old versus young, and Ostapenko may have herself pegged as favourite—lower seeding and all—after notching a considerable accolade with her win over Elina Svitolina, per WTA Insider:

Fourth seed Svitolina fell to Ostapenko in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (6), evidence if ever it were needed that Ostapenko is here to stay when it comes to fighting against the cream of the crop.

Rybarikova did collect a very impressive win over Karolina Pliskova early in the bracket, but a favourable draw thus far means her tournament is likely to end at the hands of Vandeweghe, who will make her second Wimbledon quarter-final appearance.
