Roger Federer Beats Mischa Zverev in 3rd Round of 2017 Wimbledon

Gianni VerschuerenJul 8, 2017

Roger Federer cruised to the fourth round of the 2017 Wimbledon tournament on Saturday, easily beating Mischa Zverev in three sets. The final scores were 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-4.

Zverev did well to battle back from an early break in the first set and force a tiebreak, but it was one-way traffic from that point.

As shared by TennisTV, there was every chance fans were in for a good match:

Early on, Federer dominated his younger opponent, playing some stunning passing shots with both his forehand and backhand. The Swiss star grabbed an early break and seemed untouchable on his serve, but out of nowhere, he dropped his serve with an unforced error and allowed Zverev back into the set.

A hold for love gave Federer the advantage, but the 29-year-old showed why many consider him an underrated player, holding his nerve. He earned break points in the 11th game, as FedExpress didn't play at his best, but a tiebreak eventually had to decide the set.

In that tiebreak, the veteran showed his experience, keeping Zverev at bay to win the set. Bet365 couldn't help themselves:

Zverev started the second set well but couldn't hold serve in the third game, and once again, Federer took the advantage and ran with it. Without playing superb tennis or blowing his opponent away in the rallies, the 35-year-old controlled the pace and avoided trouble.

Tennis writer Nick Nemeroff was in awe:

Zverev barely threatened on Federer's serve, and in little time, the tournament favourite doubled his lead.

Federer was gifted his next break early in the third set, as Zverev wilted under the pressure, double-faulting at the worst possible time.

In an almost perfect copy of the second set, Federer focused on holding his serve and wasted little energy on his way to the next round.

Federer will face Grigor Dimitrov in Round 4.
