Roger Federer Beats Dusan Lajovic in 2nd Round of 2017 Wimbledon

James DudkoJul 6, 2017

Roger Federer reached the third round of 2017 Wimbledon after beating Dusan Lajovic in straight sets on Centre Court on Thursday. Federer won 7-6(0), 6-3 and 6-2, overcoming a slightly sluggish start to eventually wrap up a dominant win in style.

The Wimbledon official Twitter account confirmed how quickly Federer saw off Lajovic:

Yet Federer was forced to serve to stay in the first set after Lajovic took advantage of his slow start. Fortunately for Federer, he held serve to even the opening set at five games apiece.

However, Lajovic stayed comfortable behind his own serve and retook the lead. It meant he was again chasing a break to take the set.

Federer answered the call again, though, forcing a tiebreak. Choosing his moment well, the seven-time Wimbledon winner turned on the style to win the tiebreak in a whitewash and take the set.

Ed McGrogan of Tennis indicated the one-sided finish to the set was harsh on Lajovic after his fast start:

Yet a comfortable tiebreak win for Federer was perhaps inevitable given his history when pushed into an extra game, per ATP Media Info:

An unforced error from Lajovic, who made a mess of a straightforward lob, allowed Federer to break for a 3-1 lead in the second. A typically quick and decisive service game saw Federer stretch his lead to 4-1 in what felt like a significant seizing of momentum in the match.

Battling to stay in it, Lajovic got his overhand right when he forced deuce in the next game, a key shot in helping him reduce the gap to two in the second. Federer soon served for 5-2, though, positioning him a break away from taking the set.

The 35-year-old's classy display prompted this lofty assessment from former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker during a broadcast for BBC 5 Live Sport:

Federer did his bit to live up to the praise by closing out the second set and strolling into a two-game lead in the third. Yet he couldn't engineer a double break as Lajovic clawed his way back into the set.

It proved a false dawn, though, as Federer eased through the rest of the way to book his place in the next round.

The veteran who loves Wimbledon will take some stopping on this sort of form.
