Wednesday Recap

Federer needed to recover from a break down early in the first set against Lajovic, but he hit back immediately to get the scores back on serve before rattling off seven points in a row to take the tiebreaker with ease.

From there the Swiss star took control of the match as he brushed aside the Serbian's challenge with ease, racking up an impressive 31 winners in the process according to Wimbledon's official website.

Per BBC Sport, Federer discussed his problems early in the match:

Djokovic had an even more straightforward time against Pavlasek, grabbing seven of 18 break points, while his opponent failed to take his solitary chance of upsetting the world No. 2 on his serve.

Kerber was less impressive against Flipkens despite also winning in straight sets. The opener saw the pair share five breaks of serve, though it was the German who had the edge.

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 06: Angelique Kerber of Germany plays a forehand during the Ladies Singles second round match against Kristen Flipkins of Belgium on day four of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Clu

Flipkens broke Kerber as she attempted to serve for the match in the second set, but after breaking back immediately, Kerber successfully served out the contest at the second attempt courtesy of a sublime lob.

It wasn't a vintage performance by last year's runner-up, who took advantage of 31 unforced errors from the Belgian, but she nevertheless finds herself in the third round.

Meanwhile, the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg has been tracking retirements at this year's tournament and noted another when Steve Darcis pulled out early against David Ferrer:

Unfortunately there was another retirement on Thursday when Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered what appeared to be a severe knee injury, per The Times' Stuart Fraser:

One of the biggest upsets of the day came when Rybarikova produced a sensational performance to knock out Pliskova.

The third seed may yet be set to take the top spot in the WTA's rankings, however, per BBC Sport's Russell Fuller:

Ernests Gulbis' 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over 29th seed Juan Martin del Potro was even more stunning, given the former's world ranking now sits at 589.

He'll take on Djokovic in the next round for his troubles.
