Bernard Tomic Fined, Loses Sponsors After Outburst at Wimbledon 2017
Following his first-round Wimbledon loss to Mischa Zverev on Tuesday, Bernard Tomic was fined by the International Tennis Federation and dropped by a sponsor Thursday due to post-match comments.
According to ESPN's Rob Bartlett, Tomic incurred a $15,000 penalty, and racket sponsor Head dissolved its relationship with him.
During the aftermath of his 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, defeat, Tomic said he was bored during the match and admitted to illegally calling for the trainer to interrupt Zverev's momentum rather than to treat an injury.
The 24-year-old Aussie discussed his lack of motivation and then dropped the following line about his prospects for the upcoming U.S. Open, per Alexandra Topping of the Guardian: "I couldn't care less if I make a fourth round at the U.S. Open or I lose first round. To me, everything is the same. I'm going to play another 10 years, and I know after my career I won't have to work again."
In response, Head issued a statement on its website, according to Bartlett:
"We were extremely disappointed with the statements made at Wimbledon by one of our sponsored athletes, Bernard Tomic. His opinions in no way reflect our own attitude for tennis, our passion, professionalism and respect for the game. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue our collaboration with Bernard Tomic."
Tomic is currently the No. 59 ranked player in the world, but he was ranked as high as 17th last year.
He has three career ATP singles titles to his credit, although Grand Slam success has been sparse for Tomic.
Aside from a trip to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2011, Tomic has never advanced past the fourth round at a major.
