Predicting MLB Arrival Dates for Top Prospects in 2017 All-Star Futures Game
The 2017 MLB All-Star Futures Game will be played Sunday at 4 p.m. ET at Marlins Park and air on MLB Network.
When will the players featuring in the game arrive in the big leagues? For some, it'll be this season. For others, that first cup of coffee is a year or more away.
Let's run down the top 15 prospects on the U.S. and world rosters, using MLB.com's rankings as a guide, and predict their ETAs.
You can enjoy a glimpse of them Sunday, but when will you be able to watch them at the highest level?
Yoan Moncada, INF, Chicago White Sox
1 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking: No. 1
Yoan Moncada starred in last season's Futures Game, going 2-for-5 with a home run and winning MVP honors. That September, he made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox.
After an offseason swap to the Chicago White Sox, Moncada is back on the world roster and again awaiting his call-up.
It could come before September this time for the 22-year-old Cuban, who's hitting .282 with 11 home runs and 16 stolen bases for Triple-A Charlotte. That's especially so if the White Sox jettison veterans such as third baseman Todd Frazier at the trade deadline.
ETA:ย 2017
Amed Rosario, SS, New York Mets
2 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 3
The New York Mets enter play Friday at 38-45, 11 games off the pace in the National League East.
A trade-deadline sell-off seems likely, but they might not wait until July 31 to call up shortstop and top organizational prospect Amed Rosario.
The 21-year-old Dominican is hitting .320 at Triple-A Las Vegas. Even allowing for the offense-friendly nature of the Pacific Coast League, he has little to prove in the minors.
"He's working every day to try to get better, and that's all I sense from him," said Mets director of minor league operations Ian Levin, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "He's out there doing what he needs to do to try to improve. There are things he still needs to polish up like any player, and he's going to do everything in his power to try to do that."
The Mets are wise to be deliberate with Rosario's development. In a dispiriting season, however, his impending arrival in Queens could be a much-needed bright spot.
ETA:ย 2017
Victor Robles, CF, Washington Nationals
3 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 5
The Washington Nationals are enjoying the here and now as they cruise toward an NL East crown and another shot at getting past the division series.
They have things to look forward to as well, including outfielder Victor Robles.
The speedy 20-year-old owns a .302/.388/.524 slash line with seven home runs and 14 stolen bases at High-A Potomac.
"There's nothing he can't do on a baseball field," Potomac skipper Tripp Keister said, per Baseball America's Josh Norris. "He's got tools, and he's as exciting a player as you'll see in the minor leagues. That's for sure."
Assuming he keeps streaking through Washington's system, Robles could be in line for a September call-up as soon as next season.
ETA:ย 2018
Eloy Jimenez, LF/RF, Chicago Cubs
4 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 8
After an electric start in the Cactus League this spring, Eloy Jimenez was derailed by a shoulder injury.
The Chicago Cubs' top prospect is back to health and hitting .279 with eight home runs in 40 games for High-A Myrtle Beach.
He'll have a chance to replicate last year's Futures Game, when he hit a double and three-run homer and notched four RBI for the world team.
His tools and raw power make him a tantalizing talent, but it's likely the Cubs will take their time advancing him. An MLB call-up next season is possible, but 2019 is a safer bet.
"He's just growing up," said Cubs director of player development Jaron Madison, per MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.ย "He's just 20 years old.ย There's still a maturing process, but he's getting close."ย
ETA:ย 2019
Brendan Rodgers, INF, Colorado Rockies
5 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 10
The third overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft, Brendan Rodgers owns a .359 average and .990 OPS in the minor leagues this season while logging innings at shortstop and second base.
Colorado Rockies fans can be forgiven for wanting to see the 20-year-old take his hacks at Coors Field ASAP.
Rodgers, however, is hitting just .184 since his promotion from High-A to Double-A. He's on a track toward Colorado, but don't expect him there until next season.
ETA:ย 2018
Michael Kopech, RHP, Chicago White Sox
6 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 11
If you don't know the legend of Michael Kopech and his triple-digit fastball, Bleacher Report's Scott Miller laid it out in a compelling March profile.ย
So far this season, Kopech has tallied an eye-popping 101 strikeouts in 78.1 innings for Double-A Birmingham after moving from the Red Sox to the White Sox along with Moncada and other pieces in the Chris Sale trade.
He also owns a 4.02 ERA and has issued 6.1 walks per nine innings, which means his command is a work in progress.
Assuming he zeroes in on the strike zone, a 2018 call-up isn't out of the question. It doesn't make sense for Chicago to rush Kopech, however, meaning he's probably still a couple of seasons away from singeing radar guns on the South Side.
ETA:ย 2019
Rafael Devers, 3B, Boston Red Sox
7 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 12
The Boston Red Sox need help at the hot corner. Pablo Sandoval is an injury-plagued bust, and the other options have failed to pick up the slack.
Rafael Devers, meanwhile, is hitting .302 with a .953 OPS at Double-A Portland.
The 20-year-old is Boston's top MiLB chip, but he's not ready to save the big club just yet.
Instead, look for the Sox and swap-happy president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to add a veteran such as the White Sox's Frazier at the deadline, with Devers getting his shot next year.ย
ETA:ย 2018
Lewis Brinson, CF, Milwaukee Brewers
8 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 13
Lewis Brinson has been on a tear at Triple-A Colorado Springs, notching 13 hits in his past 30 at-bats with four doubles and two home runs.ย
After a brief MLB stint in June, the 23-year-old is making a case to rejoin the Milwaukee Brewers, the surprise leaders in the NL Central.
His next call-up may not come immediately. It'll surely be at some point between now and the end of the season, though, regardless of whether The Crew remain in playoff position.
ETA:ย 2017
Nick Senzel, 3B, Cincinnati Reds
9 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 19
The second overall pick in the 2016 draft, Nick Senzel is hitting .307 with an .841 OPS between High-A and Double-A.
Soon enough, the 22-year-old University of Tennessee product will be wearing a Cincinnati Reds uniform, though it's "very unlikely" it'll happen this year, per Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer.ย
Instead, look for Senzel to earn a promotion to Triple-A Louisville and, if he keeps raking, an MLB audition by next season.
ETA:ย 2018
Corey Ray, CF, Milwaukee Brewers
10 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 21
Corey Ray, another outfield prospect from a rebuilt Brewers farm system, is a bit further away from The Show than Brinson.
The fifth overall pick in 2016 is hitting .241 with 93 strikeouts in 63 games at High-A Carolina.ย
He's swiped 18 bases, though the fact he's been caught seven times suggests there's work to be done there as well.
Ray's tools are intriguing, but he's a few developmental leaps away from prime time.
ETA:ย 2019
Brent Honeywell, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays
11 of 15MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 22
The second-ranked arm in the Futures Game behind Kopech, Brent Honeywell made the jump from Double-A to Triple-A this season with mixed results.
Overall, the 22-year-old righty owns a 4.54 ERA in 79.1 innings with the Durham Bulls and has allowed a .285 opponents' average.
He shone in his most recent start, however, as he fanned nine in six innings while yielding three hits and no runs. Overall, he's struck out 25 in his last 17 frames.
If he continues dealing, expect the Tampa Bay Rays to give him a look come September.ย
ETA:ย 2017
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 3B, Toronto Blue Jays
12 of 15MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 26
In 70 games at Single-A Lansing, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. boasts a .317 average and .883 OPS. After participating in the Futures Game, he'll pack his bags for High-A Dunedin in the Florida State League, per Morgan Campbell of the Toronto Starย (h/tย Phil Friend of the Lansing State Journal).
Obviously, this kid has a lot more going for him than a famous last name.
If his rise continues, it's conceivable Guerrero could get an MLB call-up by 2019. Then again, he's a teenager scarcely out of rookie ball. Here's betting the Toronto Blue Jays give him time.
ETA:ย 2020
Kyle Tucker, RF, Houston Astros
13 of 15MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 27
The Houston Astros selected Kyle Tucker fifth overall in the 2015 draft. Since then, the high school product has rocketed through the system.
The 20-year-old jumped from High-A Buies Creek to Double-A Corpus Christi this season and has 17 home runs and a .920 OPS between the two levels. His unusual mechanics have drawn comparisons to former Astros outfielder Hunter Pence.
"This kid is long, lean, doesn't look the part, but when he gets up there [to hit], it's a different sound," Corpus Christi manager Rodney Linares said, per Greg Rajan of the Houston Chronicle. "It's a little unorthodox because his swing is a little bit long, but he finds a way to make it work."
Barring a significant setback, Tucker could take some awkward-yet-effective cuts at Minute Maid Park by next season.
ETA:ย 2018
Francisco Mejia, C, Cleveland Indians
14 of 15
MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 33
The top catching prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com, Francisco Mejia sports a .339/.383/.555 slash line at Double-A Akron.
With backstops Yan Gomes (.233 average) and Roberto Perez (.178 average) not producing at the plate for the Cleveland Indians, it's natural to ask why the 21-year-old Mejia isn't on a plane to Progressive Field right now.
Allow Indians first base coach and former catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. to explain, via Zack Meisel of Cleveland.com: "Catching is not a position you want to rush. It's a position [in which] you want to make sure you are completely developed behind the dish, and unless you have an emergency or something like that, it's always good to have those developmental stages."
Mejia will go to Triple-A before he sniffs the big leagues. By next season, though, he could be a permanent member of The Tribe.
ETA:ย 2018
Yadier Alvarez, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
15 of 15MLB.com Prospect Ranking:ย No. 39
In 55.1 innings at High-A, Yadier Alvarez has an unsightly 5.37 ERA.ย
However, as MiLB.com's Sam Dykstra pointed out, Alvarez owns a 3.74 FIP and has "piled up strikeouts at a good clip [23.1 percent] while limiting walks [9.5 percent] and home runs [0.5 HR/9]."
The 21-year-old Cuban right-hander is raw, but he has electric stuff and could be a fixture in L.A.'s rotation a few seasons from now.
At the very least, like many of the players set to take the field in South Beach, he's worth keeping both eyes on.
