Matt JonesJul 5, 2017

Andy Murray's injury concerns appear to be behind him, as the top seed and defending champion overcame Dustin Brown in style on Centre Court on Wednesday, advancing into Round 3 at Wimbledon.

The world No. 1 surrendered just seven games in a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win against a potentially awkward opponent. Rafael Nadal, knocked out by Brown in 2015 at this stage, joined Murray in Round 3 with victory over Donald Young.

The game of the day came in the women's bracket, as Johanna Konta outlasted Donna Vekic 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8 in three hours, 10 minutes. Second seed Simona Halep is through after battling past Beatriz Haddad Maia, while two-time champion Petra Kvitova was surprised by Madison Brengle.

Wednesday Recap

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 05: Andy Murray of Great acknowledges the crowd as he celebrates victory after his Gentlemen's Singles second round match against Dustin Brown of Germany on day three of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England La

While his lowly ranking of 97 suggests Brown should be an easy opponent for Murray, you sense he's one of those players on tour plenty hope to avoid.

In the early stages of the match with the champion, we saw why. The German was playing regular drop shots, seeking to hit lines, and initially it was troubling Murray, as he failed to find rhythm.

However, Brown couldn't maintain those levels, and the top seed bustled his way into the match with some bullish tennis. As noted by the ATP World Tour Twitter feed, it was an almost flawless performance from Murray in the end:

Nadal is in a similar groove, it seems, as he marched into Round 3 with a swagger after putting Young to the sword.

There's a confidence bristling in the Spaniard at the moment, having rediscovered some of his very best form in 2017. Young was determined, battled for every ball and had the Centre Court crowd on their feet at times. But the two-time Wimbledon champion was too good over the course of three sets.

It was a surprise to hear the Centre Court quite so lively later in the day, as many would have witnessed a gruelling match between Konta and Vekic earlier on.

The heat was punishing as the duo traded blows in a deciding set, with neither giving an inch for long spells on serve. Eventually, it was Vekic who yielded at the end of an epic, sending the home fans wild and the sixth seed into Round 3 for the first time.

As we can see, courtesy of the tournament's official Twitter feed, it was a win that meant a lot to Konta:

Afterwards, the Briton paid tribute to the influence of the supporters in a match that was on a knife edge at times:

Konta's cause was helped by the elimination of one of the favourites for the title this year, as two-time champion Kvitova was beaten by Brengle.

Usually so efficient on this surface, Kvitova was unable to build momentum in this match due to a string of errors made. Brengle capitalised to her credit, securing one of her best-ever wins in Grand Slam tournaments.

However, having recently returned to action after being stabbed on her hand, the BBC Sport Twitter account paid tribute to her battling spirit:

Halep is another player who will feel confident of going deep in this tournament, and she will have been pleased with her display against the talented Haddad Maia.

This year's French Open runner-up was a break down in the first set and didn't look to be in the best of form. But Halep found her best in the clutch moments in the match, recovering to take the first set and taking total control of the second to move into Round 3.
