Andy Murray Beats Dustin Brown in Wimbledon 2nd Round, Will Face Fabio Fognini

Matt JonesJul 5, 2017

Defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray comprehensively dealt with the unique challenge posed by Dustin Brown on Centre Court on Wednesday, moving into Round 3 with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win.

There were few signs of the hip injury that hampered Murray's preparations for this tournament as he produced an efficient performance. Brown quickened pulses with his free-spirited shot-making at times, although the top seed always had enough in the tank.

After beating the German in straight sets, next up for Murray will be a meeting with 28th seed Fabio Fognini.

The match started as so many anticipated. Murray was sensible and accurate in his work, opting against taking too many chances. Brown's aggressive approach, one that helped him upset Rafael Nadal at this stage two years ago, couldn't have been more contrasting.

The 32-year-old rushed forward, played drop shots and sought to hammer balls back across court from tight angles. With the score level at 3-3 in the first set, it was working. As noted by Elizabeth Ammon of the Times, it was entertaining, too:

Still, Brown has always been hampered by his inconsistency, and you sensed Murray was waiting for him to unravel himself. At the end of the first set, he did, allowing the three-time Grand Slam champion to break and march to a 6-3 win.

Responding to that setback was always going to be difficult for Brown, and at the start of the second set, the spark from the first set wasn't quite there. Across the net, Murray continued to operate with almost robotic ruthlessness.

After sharing the first four games of the second set, the Briton took over, conjuring some class of his own with some pinpoint passing shots. Even the enigmatic Brown didn't have an answer, as four games in a row put Murray within touching distance of Round 3.

As the BBC Sport Twitter feed relayed, while his opponent was swinging wildly and making a string of errors, Murray was impeccable in his decision-making:

The Guardian's Simon Cambers praised the champion's ability to make these types of awkward contests look easy:

That trend was there in the third set, as Brown continued to mix things up. However, Murray was growing attuned to the German's movements, and while in the first set Brown looked unpredictable, the home player seemed to have drained him of ideas.

Subsequently, Murray was finding it straightforward to pick off his opponent's serve and broke early in the third set to go 2-1 ahead. After consolidating with a routine hold and then breaking again, the gig was up for the underdog.

Brown did hold serve to get another game on the board, forcing Murray to serve it out. And as he has done so many times on this court, the world No. 1 obliged.
