Novak Djokovic Wins as Martin Klizan Retires in 1st Round of 2017 Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic had an easy opening round at Wimbledon 2017, as Martin Klizan was forced to retire from the competition at the All England Club on Tuesday.
Djokovic was leading by a set after winning the first 6-3, but a calf injury forced his opponent to quit at 2-0 in the second.
The iconic player was surely hoping for a stern test in his opening encounter as he settles back into grass-court tennis, but the match was over before it had really begun.
Wimbledon's official Twitter feed highlighted the moment when the Slovakian had to retire:
Djokovic was comfortable in the first set at Centre Court, breaking serve to lead 5-3 before closing out the opener.
However, Klizan appeared to be carrying the injury through the match.
The 27-year-old simply could not keep up with the Serbian's control from the baseline and had to give up as his leg injury deteriorated.
Djokovic appeared at home in familiar surroundings, and he will once again challenge for the championship this year after victories in 2011, 2014 and 2015.
