Enzo and Big Cass Broken Up Before Tag Team Duo Reached Full Potential
Not too long ago, Enzo and Big Cass were one of the most talked-about tag teams in WWE, and they hadn't even debuted on the main roster. Far and away the most popular duo in NXT, it was a shock that they never won the NXT Tag Team Championships. After this past week, the same can be said of their WWE run.
On the July 19 edition of Monday Night Raw, Cass turned on his smaller partner and attacked him, officially ending a seemingly unbreakable partnership. While the buildup to the moment could only be paid off by a Cass heel turn, it has put an end to a team that likely should have dominated Raw since they debuted.

Unfortunately, they arrived just at the end of The New Day's historic reign, a team who played a similar role to Enzo and Cass. As WWE was not ready to have WWE's top trio pass the torch to the younger comedic team, The Realest Guys in the Room were always the second-biggest faces in the tag team division. Once The Hardy Boyz returned to take even that spot away, Enzo and Cass had nothing left.
In the past year they have worked on the main roster, Enzo and Cass have only had a single one-on-one tag team title shot. Perhaps Enzo and Cass would have had a chance if they had ever been moved to SmackDown, a brand whose tag team division still looks a bit thin. Again, though, The New Day took that spot from Enzo and Cass.
The end goal for the Certified Gs has always been clear. Cass was the major attraction, thanks to his stature and charisma. He is a monster with the potential to take up a similar role to that of Baron Corbin or Braun Strowman. With Big Show, Mark Henry and Kane all on their way out of WWE, it is no surprise WWE is building the next generation of giants.
Still, there was no reason to rush into anything.
Cass has had multiple chances to work on his own without Enzo Amore, particularly during the month Enzo was out with a concussion in May. Cass even main-evented the May 9 edition of Monday Night Raw, facing Chris Jericho, though the match was called off due to a pre-match brawl between Jericho and Dean Ambrose.
Even when he had Enzo around, Cass was gaining opportunities, including competing in a Fatal 5-Way elimination match to determine the WWE universal champion. While the tag team has been fairly successful week to week, Cass was particularly protected, rarely being pinned. WWE's been grooming him for a top spot and could have continued to do so without breaking up the popular pair.
Now Enzo and Cass will likely never get a tag team title run, which seems like a waste of a duo that was impressively popular, garnering fan reactions that rivaled even main event stars. It could even be argued that Enzo was the more popular performer, particularly because he has always been the more dynamic talker and has charisma to spare.
It is likely Enzo will not gain many opportunities on his own. In the ring, he is extremely limited and can put himself in harm's way too often. Even with a wealth of charisma, he may only find a role in WWE as a manager. The beauty of the tag team was that Enzo could take a limited role and work with his strengths just as Cass did, letting both shine together.
Perhaps more frightening is that Cass may just not be ready to leave Enzo's side.
Whenever Cass spoke on his own without Enzo around, he seemed to lack confidence, relying on the energy of Enzo to keep him going. While Cass' promos these last two weeks have been great, he may not have delivered them with such confidence if he wasn't speaking to Enzo directly.
If Cass cannot speak on his own, he will be left to rely on his wrestling to get him over. Cass was the better man in the ring of The Certified Gs, but he still has worked a severely limited style for much of his career. Big men can get away with this at times, but WWE today has too many great wrestlers for Cass to make it to the top of the roster if he is not able to wrestle a quality 15-minute match.
There is always a chance that Enzo and Cass reunite down the line, particularly if they both crash and burn on their own. However, it will likely take a long time and potentially ruin any momentum they once had. It is a shame together the two were never given a chance to prove their worth, and it will be even harder to stomach if neither can find success on his own.
