Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
According to the Internet Wrestling Database, Emma had last appeared at a May 7 show in Liverpool, England, as part of WWE's European tour. She posted May 13 on Instagram that she was rehabbing her shoulder:
The injury added to what has been a rough year for the former NXT star. She had back surgery last May that kept her out until October. Shortly thereafter, WWE began airing vignettes playing up the makeover of Emma to Emmalina.
During the Feb. 13 episode of Raw, Emmalina debuted and almost immediately announced she was basically going back to being Emma again:
Creatively, the hasty scrapping of Emmalina made sense since "Evil Emma" was one of the consistently best female heels on WWE programming. However, undoing months of hype in a matter of minutes was bound to result in criticism and ridicule, which didn't help Emma as she looked to re-establish herself in the women's division.
The women's division on Raw is stuck in a rough patch despite no shortage of talent. Having Emma back undoubtedly gives Raw another heel to feud with Bayley or Sasha, but Emma could just as easily get lost in the shuffle given the division's overall lack of direction.
