Monday Recap
Murray claimed the decisive break midway through a simple first set against Khachanov when the Russian made several errors—first to give the Scot a 15-30 lead, then a double-fault to hand him deuce.
A magnificent forehand return gave the world No. 1 the advantage, before yet another mistake—this time a wide forehand—from Khachanov sealed the break.
BBC 5 live's David Law noted Murray's early determination:
Another double-fault gifted Murray a break point early in the second, and he produced a sublime lob on the way to consolidating it with a hold, per Eurosport UK:
Some loose play from the three-time Grand Slam winner granted his opponent a way back into the set—one he duly took—but he was behind again as quickly as he was level, with Murray breaking back immediately on the way to taking the second set.
The third and final set followed a similar pattern, with Khachanov working hard to hit back after being broken early, only to be broken again straight away.
After the match, Murray paid an emotional tribute to those killed in the recent attacks on London and Manchester, per Eurosport's Dan Quarrell:
Halep had an even easier time in her match as she dropped just one game in each set, romping home to victory in an hour.
It looked as though it would be more competitive as the Spaniard earned two break points in the opening game, but after Halep fought back to hold, she quickly set about dominating the contest with some ruthless and powerful shot-making.
Per the tournament's official website, the Romanian hit 19 winners to her opponent's five.
Record's Jose Morgado hailed her efforts:
Svitolina's challenge was much stiffer, as world No. 290 Martic was on the verge of a sensational upset as she produced an outstanding performance in their match.
The Ukrainian lost the first set, but after coming back in the second, she soon found herself in danger in the third as Martic went 5-2 up.
However, Svitolina summoned an incredible response late on to win the match and set up a showdown with Halep, per the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg:
If Halep plays as confidently as she did against Suarez Navarro, Svitolina will need to show the same kind of resilience if she's to progress.
The pair could be set to produce a titanic quarter-final clash at Roland Garros provided they both play to their potential.
