All of the big names on the men's side waltzed into the second round thanks to byes, but there were still several players worth monitoring even though Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and the like were off enjoying a relaxing day in the South Florida sunshine.
Chief among them was Fabio Fognini, who dispatched American Ryan Harrison in straight sets to start his week in blemish-free fashion.
Tennis TV on Twitter offered a look at match point from Fognini's decisive victory:
Fognini is now scheduled to meet Joao Sousa in his next match, which should be music to the Italian's ears.
Those two have clashed four times previously, with Fognini prevailing on three occasions. Furthermore, Fognini has won each of the last two meetings—both of which came on outdoor hard courts.
It was also a breakout day for several French players as Benoit Paire, Jeremy Chardy and Nicolas Mahut all advanced in straight sets.
Looking ahead, Chardy figures to be under the microscope most among the players in that group since he set up a second-round date with the seventh-seeded Marin Cilic in Round 2.
And while Chardy did defeat Cilic eight years ago, the Croatian has had his number ever since. Specifically, Cilic has won his last two matches against Chardy—both of which came at Grand Slam events.

One of the biggest stories on the women's side of the draw Wednesday revolved around Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, who was ousted in the first round for the third straight tournament.
Following a three-set loss at the hands of Annika Beck in Indian Wells, Bouchard was bested Wednesday in three sets by Ashleigh Barty, as the WTA documented on Twitter:
Although Bouchard started 2017 in somewhat encouraging fashion when she reached the semifinals of her Australian Open tune-up before winning two matches at the year's first major, she's crumbled in the two months since.
The story differs for Barty, who has won eight straight matches following a WTA title in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a qualifier, according to WTA Insider on Twitter.
"It was a little bit scratchy today, but I'm happy to come through in the end and get a chance to play a second round here," Barty said, per WTATennis.com. "I love Miami and it's the first time I've ever played singles here. So it's certainly nice to play on a beautiful center court like this."
In American action, Madison Brengle stood out as one of the day's big winners thanks to her three-set triumph over Jelena Ostapenko.
The 26-year-old will now move on to face Karolina Pliskova in Round 2 after the Czech force made a run to the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open.
In their only meeting to date—which came three years ago in Austria—Pliskova emerged victorious in straight-set fashion.
Elsewhere in Red, White and Blue news, Bethanie Mattek-Sands booked a spot in the second round by virtue of a three-set victory over Katerina Siniakova.
However, Mattek-Sands will have to put together a superlative performance when she returns to the court if she wants her stay in Miami to last into the weekend.
Next up for Mattek-Sands is Elina Svitolina—who's 2-0 all-time against the American. If there's good news for Mattek-Sands, though, it's that she pushed Svitolina the distance on both occasions.
