Rio Open 2017: Monday Tennis Scores, Results, Updated Schedule
The main draw of the Rio Open 2017 kicked off Monday and already featured quite a few surprises.
Only two seeded players were in action on Day 1, but both suffered shocking upsets at the hands of qualifiers who barely sneaked into the tournament.
This is clearly sending a message that top-seeded Kei Nishikori and No. 2 Dominic Thiem better be prepared to compete in Round 1 when they start their run on Tuesday.

Monday Recap
Although illustrious names like Nishikori and Thiem had to wait to get their competition under way, there was plenty of action to take in for those in attendance on Monday.
Casper Ruud is not a household name, but he acquitted himself well against the home hopeful Rogerio Dutra Silva. The 18-year-old will be looking to enjoy a breakthrough year, and as we can see here courtesy of Tennis TV, he was delighted to secure his first triumph on the ATP Tour:
Throughout the match, the teenager was in complete control of the clash, nullifying Silva's powerful serve with some sharp returning and taking two of the three break points that came his way in the contest.
It was a landmark moment for his country, too. As noted by Josh Meiseles of the ATP World Tour, a win for a Norwegian player has been a long time coming in an ATP event:
Elsewhere, Dusan Lajovic also made his way into Round 2 having beaten Facundo Bagnis in straight sets. The Serb broke his opponent in the first game of the match and went on to see the stanza out 6-4; from there, it was always going to be difficult for the man from Argentina.
And so it transpired, as Lajovic held his nerve in the second set, snatched a break and moved into Round 2. There, he could face Thiem should the No. 2 seed come through his contest with the dangerous Janko Tipsarevic on Tuesday.
The biggest upset of the day came from Arthur de Greef, who knocked off No. 3 seed and defending champion Pablo Cuevas in three sets.
Tennis TV captured the game-winning point, which summed up the underdog's determination throughout the match:
Then again, Cuevas didn't do himself any favours in a sloppy showing. He had four double-faults and only got 46 per cent of his serves in play.
No. 8 Joao Sousa didn't even put up much of a fight against Roberto Carballes Baena. The Spanish underdog jumped out to a great start thanks to a first set that featured 16-of-17 service-point wins.
The second set was even more dominant, as Carballes Baena jumped out to a 5-0 start before settling for a 6-1 victory. Sousa didn't win any of his 11 second-serve attempts in the embarrassing second set. He ended with 44 unforced errors in a match he would like to forget.
With Carballes Baena's serving ability, he could make an extended run if he can get past teen sensation Ruud.
The only other three-set match of the day was between Argentinian competitors Diego Schwartzman and Renzo Olivo. Each player looked dominant in his winning set to force a third, which featured impressive back-and-forth play with the stakes higher.
In the end, Schwartzman advanced thanks to his defensive ability. He won 49 per cent of return points while excelling against both the first and second serves of Olivo, eventually wearing down his opponent for the win.
Finally, a battle of qualifiers saw Nicolas Kicker defeat Marco Cecchinato with a tiebreaker in the first set and a bagel in the second. Cecchinato seemed to give everything he could early on but simply couldn't compete late.
Kicker now has a chance to keep winning in a wide-open bracket thanks to De Greef.
