WWE TLC 2016: Booking Decisions That Must Be Made at PPV
The carnage awaiting WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs 2016 offers a wealth of opportunity.
The right booking moves at Sunday's SmackDown-exclusive pay-per-view can jet Baron Corbin toward the top, change the narrative of Bray Wyatt's career and exploit the power of the bad blood between Nikki Bella and Carmella.
The Backlash PPV in September laid the foundation for the blue brand's march into the New Era. New titleholders emerged. SmackDown selected its stars to build on.
At TLC, WWE has to continue that future-focused trend to cap off 2016 by elevating Corbin and The Wyatt Family. And the company can further the momentum of the women's wrestling revolution by having Bella and Carmella tear each other apart.
Broken tables and bent ladders promise to be the talk of the PPV, but the event's end goal needs to be spotlighting SmackDown's rising stars.
Baron Corbin's Dominance
1 of 4Baron Corbin has to crush Kalisto in their chairs match on Sunday.
WWE has a chance to propel The Lone Wolf up the card with an overwhelming win. Kalisto can give him a gutsy fight, but the lasting images of this bout should involve Corbin towering over Kalisto, steel chair in hand.
The company's best bet is to paint Corbin as a powerful predator.
He has already wiped out Jack Swagger. Adding Kalisto to his list would boost the big man. He would then be one big feud away from stepping into WWE World Championship contention.
The promise Corbin has showed in his rookie year should inspire WWE to shoot toward that goal, starting with the bout against Kalisto.
Let Nikki Bella and Carmella Make Full Use of No Disqualification Match
2 of 4The intensity of Nikki Bella and Carmella's No Disqualification clash has to match the intensity of their animosity for each other.
Carmella has wanted to end Bella. After suffering a series of ambushes and cheap shots, The Fearless One has to be seething and starving for vengeance.
So when they meet at TLC with no rules to hold them back, the action can't be watered down. WWE has to let these women bash each other with chairs and splinter Kendo sticks against their bodies.
Harnessing the match's stipulation will be key to its success.
WWE has to let these two frothing animals off the leash and allow them to tell an appropriately violent story. Carmella will benefit greatly from being a part of a match more brutal than we're used to seeing from the women's division.
The Rise of The Wyatt Family
3 of 4The stage is set for TLC 2016 to be Bray Wyatt's coronation. All the unfulfilled promise and stop-and-start booking can now give way to The Eater of Worlds scoring his biggest career win.
He and Randy Orton have to take down Heath Slater and Rhyno to claim the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.
Wyatt has long been the monster who almost feasted. WWE has disappointed with its handling of the emerging star by not allowing him to ascend to the top of the food chain.
WWE got what it could from Slater and Rhyno's story. It's time to tell the tale of The Wyatt Family reigning over the division. It's time to elevate and showcase Wyatt by way of seizing the tag team titles at Sunday's PPV.
Keep the Intercontinental Championship on The Miz
4 of 4The Miz has to remain IC champion.
WWE will hurt the belt's momentum with another title change so soon. We're barely over two weeks removed from The Miz dethroning Dolph Ziggler. Before that, The Showoff only held the title for 37 days, per WWE.com.
These two rivals traded the championship several times over in 2014, diluting the power of each title win. There's no sense in doing that again.
Besides, WWE hasn't earned a Ziggler win from a narrative standpoint.
Ziggler's victory at No Mercy was the culmination of a well-told story of a desperate man out to prove himself. WWE has since ignored the Ziggler-Miz rivalry for the most part. The build for this match ahead of TLC has been tepid.
It would feel cheap and thrown-in for Ziggler to seize the championship again. WWE is better off letting The Miz thrive as a megalomaniac titleholder for a long time to come.
