2017 NFL Draft: Draft Radar Heading into NFL Week 13
NFL draft season is in full effect.
With rivalry weekend coming to a close and a new top 10 shaking out in the college football landscape, eyes are shifting towards some of the most talented teams in the country.
Fortunately for draft fans, talented teams means plenty of talented prospects. Finally, a top quarterback has emerged, which will make for a very interesting top five as teams like the Browns, 49ers and Jets all search for their franchise signal-caller.
We'll even spotlight a few of the best special team prospects in the country this week as Adoree' Jackson continues to make big play after big play. Who's on the draft radar as we get to the final stretch run of the college and NFL seasons? Let's break it all down.
Stock Up
1 of 6
Kevin King, CB, Washington
Washington's "other" corner across from stud Sidney Jones was lights out against Washington State this weekend. King played 76 of the Huskies' 77 defensive snaps, allowing one catch on four targets for nine yards and an NFL passer rating of 39.6.
At 6'3", he has superb length in coverage and tracks the ball well on deeper throws. He projects as a Day 2 pick for the 2017 draft.
Taco Charlton, DL, Michigan
In an absolute thriller in one of the greatest college football rivalries, Charlton was unblockable for the Wolverines. He had two sacks and eight total quarterback pressures with six total solo stops. In a season where he is approaching double digit sacks and has tallied 44 total quarterback pressures, he is making a serious case to be a top-50 lock in the spring.
Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State
Godwin has endured all kinds of quarterback madness in his Penn State career, but he was the catalyst for Trace McSorley lighting up Michigan State's secondary in the second half Saturday evening. He hauled in all five of his targets for 135 yards and two touchdowns, displaying excellent route running and tracking on multiple deep receptions.
Stock Down

Devonte Fields, EDGE, Louisville
Kentucky stunned Louisville this weekend and the Cardinals defense did not have a good showing. While Fields managed to register a sack, he was a vital part of a front that got eaten up against the run while he missed two tackles as well.
Fields has premium pass-rush talent but in a deep edge class with question marks on and off the field, he's facing a big uphill battle to be a first round pick.
Noah Brown, WR, Ohio State
Brown is a stellar raw talent that is a constant mismatch with his size, but the quarterback play at Ohio State has really put a halt on his draft stock in recent weeks. He was targeted six times against Michigan, but only had three catches for 40 yards and no significant red-zone impact.
More alarming is that in his last three games he only has four catches for 62 yards with zero touchdowns. This is a player that has the ability to take over games but if he declares, scouts will see the film gave him little opportunity at Ohio State to do so.
DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame
The roller coaster season for Kizer continued against USC. While he had a few bright spots, such as pushing the ball down the field, his struggle when the heat is on continued. When pressured, he only completed two of nine passing attempts for 16 yards and an interception while taking six sacks.
Kizer's situation at Notre Dame has not helped him this year, but he continues to hold on to the ball too long and struggle with the speed of processing through reads. He has a ton of upside but failed to solidify himself as a top-10 selection if he declares for the 2017 draft.
Eye-Popping Prospect Numbers of the Week
3 of 6
Tennessee pass-rusher Derek Barnett got his 12th sack of the season against Vanderbilt this weekend. He also had three more quarterback hits and 11 total pressures. It has been a terrific season for Barnett, who now has registered an absurd 64 total quarterback pressures.
It's time I give some love to a player who isn't eligible for this year's draft, but you need to know his name: LSU running back Derrius Guice. With Leonard Fournette out with injury, Guice ran for 281 yards on 36 carries for four touchdowns, while forcing an astonishing 16 tackles. He's looking like a top-10 prospect for the 2018 NFL draft.
With his teammate Quincy Wilson emerging in 2016, it seems as if many have forgotten how good Florida cornerback Teez Tabor is. He was targeted seven times on Saturday against Florida State but only allowed three catches for 23 yards. He also broke up three of the four incompletions against him. Tabor has fantastic ball skills and his aggressive nature works more often than not. He's a Round 1 corner on my board in the loaded 2017 class.
Special Teams Demons
4 of 6
Adoree Jackson, USC
The Adoree Jackson show was on full display this weekend against Notre Dame as he returned a punt for a touchdown, took a screen pass for a long touchdown and returned a kick for one.
Jackson has elite speed and matches that with great vision on finding a lane to turn on the jets. With eight career returns for touchdowns, he is one of the best special teams players in this draft class and could have an instant impact there if he declares.
Ryan Switzer, UNC
On top of being a great receiver for the Tar Heels, Switzer has thrived as their punt returner with seven going back for a touchdown in his college career. With a punt return average of 11.1 yards per return in his career, he'll be a plug-and-play option at the next level much like Jackson.
Rashaad Penny, San Diego State
The sleeper candidate of the list, Penny has averaged a ridiculous 39.1 yards per return with two touchdowns on only nine attempts. Penny is not the primary returner because he also gets plenty of touches from the running back position, but at the next level his speed and size (5'11", 220 lbs) could see him lend a hand on special teams at the start of his career.
The Clear-Cut QB1: UNC’s Mitch Trubisky

The Clear-Cut QB1: UNC's Mitch Trubisky
If you're a frequent reader of draft radar, you've probably noticed I consistently say no quarterback has been able to separate themselves from the pack for much of this season.
Clemson's Deshaun Watson has shown plenty of promise, but his inconsistencies with ball security and placement at times is a big question mark right now. Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer has all of the upside in the world, but his processing speed needs to improve in order to succeed at the next level.
North Carolina junior Mitch Trubisky, in his first year starting for the Tar Heels, has flourished. While his overall play speed, like any rookie quarterback, will need to develop at the next level, he carries the least amount of question marks in this group. He has a quick release, above-average mobility, works through reads and throws with touch at all three levels of the field.
Quarterback-needy teams picking in the top 10 will have an interesting decision to make next spring. This draft class is loaded with blue chip talent at the top such as pass-rusher Myles Garrett, safety Jamal Adams, and running backs Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook. With that being said, the demand is always off the charts for potential franchise quarterbacks, and Trubisky is exactly that.
Mocking the Top Five Picks
6 of 6
1) Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett, EDGE, Texas A&M
It will be interesting to see how the Browns solve the future of their quarterback position. Will they consider flipping their other first rounder for Jimmy Garoppolo? Could they use that pick on a quarterback that slides out of the top five like Deshaun Watson? Either way, Myles Garrett is still the best player in the draft, and landing him here is a home run.
2) San Francisco 49ers: Mitch Trubisky, QB, UNC
The 49ers, assuming Chip Kelly keeps his job, will not hesitate to solve their problem at quarterback. Trubisky is the best one in this class and will not stay on the board for long. He's a really nice fit for San Francisco.
3) Chicago Bears: Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama
The Bears would be in a tough spot if things shake out this way. They miss out on an elite edge-defender in Garrett and also the top quarterback in Trubisky. With that being said, Allen is one of the safest picks in the entire draft and immediately improves their front seven.
4) Jacksonville Jaguars: Dalvin Cook, RB, FSU
The Jaguars will have a big decision to make with starting quarterback Blake Bortles struggling this year. Do they look to get him more help or try to give him one more year? If they go with first option, Dalvin Cook is a blue-chip running back prospect that they should grab.
5) New York Jets: Jamal Adams, S, LSU
The Jets need help in the secondary as their cornerbacks have struggled, and starting safety Marcus Gilchrist has seen his play greatly decline in comparison to 2015. Adams is a do-it-all alpha on the back end of the LSU Tigers defense that would be a Day 1 starter. With him and Calvin Pryor playing behind a strong front seven, Todd Bowles' defense would be trending in the right direction again.
