"I know I can play away from the puck," the 2011 third-round pick said in October, per Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel. "I need to bring more offense when I can. ... I know I'm competing with eight or nine guys, but it's a healthy competition and a way to make me better."
He had a chance to make the Panthers roster out of the preseason but lost the competition and eventually became expendable.
Sgarbossa, 24, has played in nine games this season and 19 overall in his career, totaling zero goals and three assists across four seasons.
He has been up and down between the NHL and AHL this season and throughout his career, although he has proved himself at lower levels in the past. He won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy at the Ontario Hockey League in 2011-12, finishing with 47 goals and 55 assists.
The center spent the majority of the 2015-16 season with the San Diego Gulls, finishing with 44 points.
According to the Panthers' official site, Sgarbossa will be assigned to Springfield.
