NHL Trade Rumors: Latest on Andrew Hammond, Islanders' Scoring Search

Joe PantornoNov 17, 2016

It might be early in the NHL season, but teams around the league are already looking to make some drastic changes given their starts.

That means that the trade market has been the topic of conversation recently, as some notable names and surprising teams are looking to make moves.

Here is the latest on some of the most recent rumors.

Andrew Hammond

Ottawa Senators goalie Andrew Hammond has been experiencing quite a fall from grace over the past three years.

As a little-known second-year man in 2014-15, Hammond burst onto the scene and won 20 of his 23 starts, leading the Senators to an improbable postseason run.

With a .941 save percentage and 1.79 goals-against average, he finished in the top 10 of Vezina Trophy voting despite his limited time on the ice.

Since then, though, Hammond has struggled, especially this season, as he's started just two games while allowing six goals with a .793 save percentage.

The Senators look as though they've had enough, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman:

However, it could be a risky move dealing Hammond, as he at least provides insurance for the Senators' goalie corps. Starter Craig Anderson's wife is battling cancer, which has pulled him away from the team at times.

Ottawa did deal for Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins, who has performed well in his two appearances with the Senators, posting a .983 save percentage.

But if the Senators do trade Hammond, they will have to look for a third option to ensure they'll have two goalies ready to dress every night.

Islanders' Scoring Search

It's been a miserable start to the 2016-17 season for the New York Islanders.

A team that finished as the fifth-best club in the Eastern Conference last year with 100 points before winning its first playoff series since 1993, the Islanders have started this season with just 13 points from 16 games, which is the worst mark in the East.

They've scored just 40 goals in the process, which is near the bottom 10 of the entire league.

It's made the departures of Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen over the summer hurt that much more, as new signings Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera have yet to hit their stride in Brooklyn.

The lack of production has left captain and All-Star John Tavares high and dry as the team's main source of scoring. However, during an appearance on the NHL Network, Friedman stated the Islanders are taking a good look at the trade market for help (via Chris Nichols of FanRag):

"

I think one of the things that we are talking about now is I think the New York Islanders are trying to find some offense. I think they’re looking to see what’s out there. Are there some wingers or some forwards out there that can help them get their offense going. I think Garth Snow is looking around right now and seeing if there’s anything that he can do to get that team going because as you mentioned, they’re in a really rough spot.

"

Of the Islanders' top five scorers, two of them are defenseman in Dennis Seidenberg and Nick Leddy. Seidenberg, though, won't be seeing the ice any time soon after he broke his jaw during Saturday's game against the Florida Panthers.

New York forwards not named Tavares, Brock Nelson or Shane Prince have combined for just 18 goals this season. That's 11 prospective scorers with minimal production, which is a recipe for disaster within an Islanders team whose season could already be on the brink come December.
