Matchups to Watch

Denver Broncos at New Orleans Saints

SANTA CLARA, CA - NOVEMBER 06: Quarterback Drew Brees #9 of the New Orleans Saints signals from behind the line of scrimmage against the San Francisco 49ers during the second quarter at Levi's Stadium on November 6, 2016 in Santa Clara, California. The Ne

The Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints have spent the past few weeks heading in opposite directions.

The defending champion Broncos have lost three of their last five games and have slipped to third place in the AFC West. The Saints, meanwhile, have won four of their last five and have pulled into second place in the NFC South.

This game could make or break the playoff hopes for both teams.

It should also be an exciting clash of contrasting styles. The Broncos are built on stiff defense and a ball-control offense. New Orleans possesses a young, inconsistent defense but an explosive offense that is capable of competing with any team in the league.

Pro Football Focus rates Denver second in overall defense and New Orleans fourth in overall offense.

The way the game unfolds could depend on how Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian and the Broncos offense are able to operate. The offense struggled to keep pace last week against the Oakland Raiders, who put the score out of reach with their own explosive offense.

Denver was never able to find an offensive rhythm against the Raiders because Oakland kept the Broncos offense off the field by running the ball. As a team, the Raiders rushed for more than 200 yards.

Expect the Saints to mimic Oakland's Week 9 game plan, even if implementing it won't be easy.

Denver, meanwhile, will want to avoid a shootout. As good as Siemian has been at times this season, he isn't a match for Saints quarterback Drew Brees and the myriad weapons at his disposal.

Seattle Seahawks at New England Patriots

Sunday night brings a clash between two perennial powerhouses and a game that could be one of the best of the year. When the Seahawks travel to take on the Patriots, they will do so with the ghost of Super Bowl XLIX on everyone's mind.

"It’s a terrible memory. Every time it comes up it just sticks in your gut," Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said, per the Associated Press' Tim Booth. "It’s a new season, it was two years ago. It’s something that’s always there, it’s something I’ve grown from, something that I learned from. But that isn’t going away, it’s always going to be there."

Will Seattle manage to get its revenge, or will Tom Brady and the Patriots continue their march toward another AFC East title and a shot at another Super Bowl?

A lot will depend on Seattle's ability to run the football. The team has struggled often this season and is averaging just 74.5 yards per game on the ground. If the Seahawks cannot get their ground game going, they're going to have a difficult time keeping Brady and Co. off the field.

They'll also be a lot more inclined to pass from the 1-yard line.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear Seattle will have running back Thomas Rawls back in time for this game, according to John Boyle of Seahawks.com. With Christine Michael hurting, we could see an expanded role for Seahawks rookie C.J. Prosise.

For New England, the game plan should be simple: control the ball with an efficient offense and play opportunistic defense.

Even if this game becomes a defensive struggle, it could favor New England. Pro Football Focus rates Seattle sixth in overall defense, while the Patriots come in fifth.

The Patriots deserve to be favorites in this game, but we're not sure they can win by more than a touchdown. Expect a late score from Seattle to make this one appear closer than it really was.

Cincinnati Bengals at New York Giants

If the Patriots do dominate the rest of the season and make an appearance in the Super Bowl, the one team they won't want to see there is the New York Giants.

The Giants, who have quietly risen to 5-3, cannot be counted out of the Super Bowl race. They have an underrated and improving defense—rated 10th overall by Pro Football Focus—and an offense capable of hitting the big play at any given second.

The challenge for the Giants this week is a desperate Bengals team. Cincinnati still has a shot in the AFC North despite holding a 3-4-1 record. The Ravens sit atop the division with a 5-4 record, but the Bengals have a long way to go before proving they can really be a contender.

The reality is that they are a wounded team that has lost or tied in three of its last four games.

The Bengals have explosive weapons on offense, especially wide receiver A.J. Green, but the defense hasn't looked like the one that paved the way to a playoff run in 2015. The Bengals are allowing an average of 378.5 yards per game and have been especially bad against the pass.

Pro Football Focus rates the Bengals 31st against the pass. This could be a weakness the Giants can exploit with pass-catchers like Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Victor Cruz—assuming Cruz can play.

Expect a back-and-forth offensive game similar to the one the Bengals played with the Washington Redskins in London a couple of weeks ago.

Hopefully, this one will end with a winner.
