Randy Gregory Reportedly Fails Drug Test: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

In the midst of a 14-game suspension, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has reportedly failed another drug test on Friday.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Gregory is in line to be suspended for an additional year.

Per Rapoport, Gregory can appeal, and the NFL has yet to confirm a failed test:

On Sunday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones commented on Gregory, per Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News, "I know the details of his situation, and I can't and I won't comment on details about it. But I am not giving up on [Randy] Gregory for the Cowboys and certainly not giving up on him as a person in life. At all. Not that it makes any difference that I do, but I do not dismiss him from our future."

Gregory is serving a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, which was added to his original four-game ban. He would have been eligible to return to the team on Dec. 19.

The 23-year-old Gregory was a second-round pick out of Nebraska by the Cowboys in the 2015 NFL draft. He was initially expected to be a first-round selection, but he failed a drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Gregory played sparingly for the Cowboys in 2015 and ended his rookie season with just 11 tackles and no sacks after taking down the quarterback 16.5 times in his two years with the Cornhuskers.

While Dallas has the NFL's best record at 8-1, potentially losing Gregory for the rest of the year and much of 2017 would eliminate the possibility of a pass-rushing boost.

Gregory has yet to prove he can get to the quarterback at the NFL level, but he would have given Dallas another option on passing downs.

Defense is seemingly the one thing that could prevent the Cowboys from a Super Bowl run, and they will be forced to find an internal solution on the pass-rushing front with Gregory unavailable and the trade deadline in the rearview mirror.
