The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill provided a brief summary of the altercation:
Fox Sports' Skip Bayless was surprised to see both men sent to the locker room:
Erving ripped off Irving's helmet and threw it at him during the fight. Fox Sports officiating expert Mike Pereira noted that action warrants an automatic ejection. Pereira also agreed with the referees' decision to eject Irving:
According to the NFL's conduct policy, Erving and Irving could face a minimum fine of $30,387 for fighting.
Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot thought the ejection came at a bad time for Erving:
A first-round pick in the 2015 draft, Erving has moved around the offensive line throughout his two years with the Browns. He primarily played guard in his rookie year after an injury to Joel Bitonio and struggled at the position.
Transitioning to center hasn't brought much success for the 24-year-old. Pro Football Focus grades him last (38.0) among 34 qualified centers.
On Friday, Browns head coach Hue Jackson said he wants Erving to be the long-term solution at center, but he'd consider moving the second-year lineman to tackle if need be, per Cabot.
Sunday's game could have provided Erving with the vital experience he needs if he's going to grow as a center. Instead, he'll have to wait until Cleveland's Week 10 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens to see the field again.
