Russell Wilson Comments on QB Hits, Week 10 Patriots Matchup and World Series

Scott PolacekNov 2, 2016

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson opened up on a number of different topics in an interview with NFL Media's Brooke Cersosimo on Wednesday, including the physical nature of his position:

"

Obviously, if we didn't want to get hit, we'd be playing a different sport. That's just the truth. If I didn't want to get hit, I'd be playing tennis. But I think that in terms of being smart on the field, you gotta get down and protect yourself. I haven't seen all the hits, so I don't know if some of them are illegal. I don't really know, because I haven't really seen [Cam Newton] play this year as much.

Wilson's comments came after Newton complained he wasn't drawing flags for the same hits that other quarterbacks do following the Carolina Panthers' 30-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Newton said some of the hits are "taking the fun out of the game," per Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke with Newton about the signal-caller's concerns Tuesday.

While Wilson stressed the need for quarterbacks to get down and protect themselves, he has dealt with a number of injuries this season. According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, knee, ankle and pectoral injuries have hampered Wilson, and the Seahawks offense has struggled as a result.

The team ranks an abysmal 29th in the league in points per game and 23rd in yards per game this season, and is staring at a difficult Super Bowl XLIX rematch with the 7-1 New England Patriots in Week 10.

However, Wilson called that looming matchup "just another game on the [schedule]" and pointed out that his team needs to get through its Week 9 contest against the Buffalo Bills first, per Cersosimo.

The Patriots game will feature plenty of intrigue, considering New England beat Seattle, 28-24, after Malcolm Butler picked off a Wilson pass at the goal line in the closing seconds of the Super Bowl two years ago.

Wilson also commented on Wednesday's Game 7 of the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, per Cersosimo: "I've always loved the Cubs, but I think the Cleveland Indians are going to win."

Wilson acknowledged his "buddy" Andrew Miller is why he picked Cleveland.

There's been no word on whether the Cubs will attempt to use Wilson—whom the Texas Rangers selected in the Rule 5 draft—as a pinch hitter in an effort to counter Miller's nasty slider.
