NFL Week 9 Top Game to Watch
Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders
While several Week 9 games will have a significant impact on the playoff standings, it is fair to say none will have bigger implications near the top of either conference than the Sunday night battle between the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders.
Broncos versus Raiders games are always significant because of how bitter their rivalry is, but this one is of particular importance as they are tied atop the AFC West at 6-2.
According to NFL Research, it has been almost two decades since Denver and Oakland were both this good this deep into the same season:
As pointed out by Andrew Mason of the Broncos' official site, there is a lot to like about Sunday's tilt and everything that is riding on it:
Arguably the most intriguing aspect of the game is the fact it is such a huge stylistic clash in terms of what both teams excel at most.
The Raiders are an offensive juggernaut, ranking sixth in points per game, fifth in total offense and fourth in passing under the guidance of quarterback Derek Carr.
Oakland's defense leaves something to be desired, though, as it is 22nd in scoring, 31st in total yards allowed per game and 27th against the pass.
Conversely, Denver's offense is 27th in offensive yards per game and 13th in scoring with inexperienced signal-caller Trevor Siemian managing the game.
The defending Super Bowl champions also remain dominant on defense, ranking third in total offense allowed, fifth in points per game allowed and first in passing defense.
Oakland is at its best when it is throwing the ball effectively, but Broncos safety Darian Stewart believes the Raiders will be in big trouble if they rely too heavily on that, per SiriusXM NFL Radio:
Carr is coming off a game that saw him throw for a career-high 513 yards and four touchdowns against a shaky Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, but the sledding promises to be much tougher against Denver.
The Broncos' greatest vulnerability defensively is against the run, as they rank just 24th in that regard.
Oakland is eighth in rushing offensively, and if it can get Latavius Murray going, it has a chance to grind out some yardage consistently.
The Raiders are among the NFL's fastest-rising teams, but according to ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez, Carr knows they have to knock the Broncos from the perch before they can be considered the team to beat in the division: "The road to win the division goes through them. The road to the Super Bowl goes through them. They're on top. Everyone wants to crown us because we haven't won for so long and now we are [winning]. But we are not on top. We respect everybody but fear no one."
Carr seems to have brought a winning mentality to the Raiders for the first time in years, but his respect for the Broncos ensures there won't be overconfidence.
Denver may not be much to write home about offensively, but that was the case last year, and it rode the defense all the way to a championship.
The Broncos and Raiders are a classic matchup of substance against style, but if Oakland is able to prevail at home, it would be impossible to ignore it also has substance and a chance to contend in the AFC.
