Shanghai Rolex Masters 2016: Sunday Tennis Scores, Results and Updated Schedule

James DudkoOct 9, 2016

Fabio Fognini will face reigning champion Novak Djokovic, after the Italian won his first-round match at the 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters on Sunday. Fognini beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets to set up a second-round clash with Djokovic, after the Serb was placed in the same half of the main draw as Rafael Nadal.

British player Kyle Edmund also progressed by beating 10th seed Dusan Lajovic in qualifying. But there was a minor shock when Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, the seventh seed, was eliminated at the same stage, thanks to Czech Republic player Lukas Rosol.

Here are the full results from Sunday's matches:

Recap

Fognini stayed strong on serve to beat Ramos-Vinolas. A pair of aces sent the Italian on his way to winning the first set, but he needed to claim a seventh game to do it.

Things went easier in the second set, where Fognini converted four of nine break points and nine of 13 returning off second serve to frustrate his opponent. With his service game disturbed, Ramos-Vilonas became guilty of more than a few costly errors.

Fognini closed things out with a little room to spare, but he'll know things are about to get a lot tougher. There's no other way to describe the prospect of meeting defending champion Djokovic.

Fognini is first up for the world No. 1 after he was placed in the same half as Nadal, according to Ma Yue of Shanghai Daily. The same source also reported how Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka headline the other half of the draw.

Edmund's also in the mix after surviving the serving power of Lajovic, who boomed nine aces to help push the match to a third set. However, Edmund still won an impressive 66 percent of his return points. Whenever he needed to manufacture a shot, the 21-year-old was able to do it.

He may have lost out to Murray in the quarter-final of the China Open, but Edmund is already showing how his talent and potential will bear watching in Shanghai.

But the crowds in China won't be able to see Bellucci after the Brazilian was downed in straight sets by Rosol. The latter broke serve three times to rattle big-hitting Bellucci. By contrast, Rosol saved a pair of break points to deny his South American opponent the chance to build any momentum.

More would have been expected of Bellucci, with making the draw representing the bare minimum. Yet he paid the price for some erratic tennis, proving every player needs to be at his best at each stage of this formidable tournament.

It's a lesson the big names of the sport should heed. Taking it on board may not be a problem for Djokovic, who won't have been worn down by the China Open, an event he missed due to an elbow injury.

Yet he'll know how the likes of Murray and Wawrinka have been building momentum and remain major threats to his hopes of a fourth Shanghai win from the last five years.
