John Petty to Alabama: Crimson Tide Land 4-Star SG Prospect

Alec NathanNov 10, 2016

John Petty's electric stylings have made him a coveted wing prospect in the eyes of some of the country's most prestigious programs, and Alabama bolstered its roster when the J.O. Johnson High School product committed to the Crimson Tide on Friday.

Scout's Evan Daniels first relayed word of Petty's decision, which came on the same day 5-star point guard Collin Sexton committed to head coach Avery Johnson and the Crimson Tide.

ESPN.com's Jeff Borzello provided some insight regarding the chase for Petty's services:

A 4-star recruit, Petty graded out as the 44th-ranked player overall and ninth-ranked shooting guard in the country among all 2017 recruits, per Scout. Plus, Petty was the top-ranked 2-guard in all of Alabama and the No. 3 shooting guard in the entire South region.

Petty's not a conventional 2-guard in that his shooting stroke isn't the most valuable part of his arsenal, but that's not a huge knock.

Petty is still a capable outside shooter with room for improvement, and his athleticism on both ends of the floor has allowed him to excel as a slasher and above-the-rim finisher.

At 6'5'', 180 pounds with a wingspan that's been measured at 6'9'', per DraftExpress, Petty has the potential to develop into a lockdown defender thanks to some stellar lateral agility.

According to DraftExpress, "Petty isn't the most dynamic prospect as he doesn't have much off the dribble game, and isn't overly versatile, but he most certainly has all of the ingredients of a high-level role player who can play both ends of the floor."

Assuming Petty can buy into a role as a determined defender and off-ball playmaker next to Sexton, his stock should continue to rise with a potential future in the NBA on the horizon.
